BenW
Hey All. Just a question really, I have a new fiesta and done about 7000 miles in it now. However I don’t really seem to be getting great MPG. I motorway drive 85% of the time between speeds of 65-80mph. On a full tank (45 litres) my car will do between 315-330 miles. I don’t "rag" my car, I don’t accelerate overly fast and as said I do mainly motorway driving. From my workings to work out ACTUAL MPG. I take the amount of miles my car does and divide it by how many gallons my tank takes (9.91). 45 litres divide by 4.54. So lets say on average 337.5 miles per tank (when my car says its on 0 miles + the 15miles reserve). DIVIDE that by 9.91 = 34.06MPG Does that sound right??? ON paper it was meant to be 40+ and I’ve driven it extra careful on a take to see if makes a difference, that’s the 330miles!! My previous fiesta... 2litre ST had an actual MPG of 31.5MPG? What’s wrong? I’ve changed to premium/ultimate petrol, used different suppliers, no difference. Using my maths, what’s your MPG on the 1.6 Petrol engine, or other models to compare? Sorry if repeat post, Cheers. Oh and the MPG on the trip computer lies!! :P 45 litre tank = 9.91 gallons. Actual miles / 9.91 = MPG.
sussex
I have 1.4 zetec and I get 300-320 miles on each tank, and I, like you do 80% ish of my driving on national speed limit A roads or motorways and dont caine the car too much. if I drive like a saint I get 330ish miles per tank and thats running it right down to the light, I too am less than impressed. We have a 1.6 petrol and yes the trip computer lies ours normally says around 46 / 47mpg and I do a mixture of 30mph and 60/70mph roads but have kept a little spreadsheet and keep my trip computer and my calculated mpg's and after 3,000 miles the trip total average is 46.5mpg and the actual average (calculated) is 41.7mpg so thats an over calculation of about 11% !!!!! I have noticed its closer to what the trip says if you go on a really long trip and stay to about 60mph, and I have also noticed at 60mph the average can be seen to be creeping up on the computer but go 70mph and it starts creeping down. I have also noticed the engine noise (with stereo off) is quite-ish at 60mph yet seems to go loud at 70mph, a small increase in speed but noticeable change in engine noise (which is different to road noise as this changes dependant on the type of road surface / tarmac your on) Try sticking to say 65mph and see what that does to mpg (in cruise mode if you have it)
greenymk7
im gettin 60.8 out of my 1.6 TDCI atm. lots of motorway driving but i also do alot of short trips so im very happy so far

boodachris
greenymr7 its ok for you to say what yours it at the moment its alll depends how much you got in you tank then the trip works out(from what you got in there) and average is out and tells you how many MPG you got left!!. I think thats right anyway,lol...
titanium_s_spec
average says 32 on computer but i do have the 140 upgrade so i guess real figer is high 20's i supose and as my 2 litre alpha returns the same sort of mpg i guess the fiesta is quite bad
DONFRAMAC
im gettin 60.8 out of my 1.6 TDCI atm.lots of motorway driving but i also do alot of short trips so im very happy so far My Mk 6.5 1.25 Zetec Climate recently had its 1st service, where they failed to notice that the front discs were wearing only on the hidden faces, leaving the outer faces to get polished/glazed. I noticed this when I got home (110 miles north), so spent £54 to have a local mechanic strip/ clean/deglaze pads/apply brake grease, and that made a big difference to the car. The service on 8/09/2009, was followed by a 125 mile trip on "A" roads, with a bit of loud pedal due to leaving late. that showed 39 MPG on the dash. The return trip 2 days later was less rushed, although I travelled 110 miles in 2 hours, despite a detour for an accident. The cumulative MPG rose to 41.25, confirmed by exact calculation, after a rapid visit to the ESSO pumps. I have always found that front discs need this treatment at least once per year, due to road salt and grit, so it seems obvious that Ford don't bother applying brake grease to the floating calipers at the PDI, even in the Highlands. It took a brief loan of a new Focus during the service to highlight the brake problem, followed by a quick check for a wear step on the inside of the discs ;-- ALL the wear was on the inside, and explained my poorish brakes. They are great now, and the lack of drag can be heard and felt as greater throttle response. P.S. I got fobbed off about my complaint about my remote key losing power, and needing close approach to the car for it to open it. My mechanic fitted a Tesco sourced one (two for £3), and it has been much better. the old battery had dropped from 3 volts to 2.7. That is a big drop for a battery that has to put out a blast of radio frequency, as well as keep a trickle of current at all times, inside it to retain coding. Ford do seem lacking, and my car had not even been started on when I returned early from a retail park, and had to kick my heels for 2 hours in the showroom, after my car had been there for 3 hours already. At least I got a free Jetwash, and left before rush-hour. P.S. the mileage on my car is ~4500.
pikestones
Ive had my 1.6tdci Titanium for 4 months now. These are the figures. miles 8374 Litres 642.9 Gallons 141.6 MPG 60.3 On a motorway run I get 500 from a tank easily, and often 550 miles I do find when town driving the MPG drops to 40-50. On my last fiesta I found the trip meter was about 10 % out,on the new one I find it to be within about 5%.
paulworthing
im gettin 60.8 out of my 1.6 TDCI atm. And I am getting, according to the computer, 34 mpg out of my 1.6 Ti VCT - oh who care's anyway, if I wanted a sensible car I should have brought the diesel Smart and got 80+ MPG . . . rikernumber1
Hi BenW, I'm a Fiesta Newbie, but I hope you don't mind me commenting on your method. Running your tank down to empty and using the tank capacity as a basis isn't going to be the most accurate method. The most accurate method (on any car) is as follows: 1. Fill tank (brim). Zero trip meter or make note of mileage. 2. Drive until tank is nearly empty. 3. Fill tank again (brim). Make note of mileage travelled or trip meter readin. Make note of litres used to fill tank - this will be the actual fuel you've used over a known distance, because you are filling up to the same point you started with. Divide litres filled by 4.54 to get gallons used; divide miles travelled by gallons used to get accurate mpg (for that tank). Rinse and repeat as the saying goes, for longer term averages. I got 44mpg out of the first tank on our Mk6 1.2 Finesse - mix of motorway & urban. Reasonably happy with that. Hope this helps.
harweyko
Check below stated web site, you can compare with lot of cars with same engine and also compare town/outside/highway mileage ;) http://www.spritmonitor.de/ You can see it for example in my signature... amarokuk
I have had my 1.4 Petrol Titaium 3dr for 4 weeks mostly it's been trips to my office about 17 miles with roughly one 3rd on slow urban roads and the rest on the motorway (which can be a bit slow sometimes and even totally stopped near the junction at work) I have managed between 42 and 43 MPG which is based on an average speed of 28MPH (fIgures from the trip computer quoted but manual checks of amount of fuel added and the miles covered comes out roughly the same). I am quite happy with this figure as it's more than I expected. The best firgure I have seen was over the 22mile run back from the dealers when I bought the car. The trip is all on a roads and the motorway only a mile or so at each end of urban. There was little traffic and my average speed was 52MPH with an MPG of 55.3 If it can do that on a longer run consistently I will be very happy. Time will tell I guess. Smett72
I tend to get around 39-40mpg out of my 1.6 Ti VCT, although my trip computer persists in trying to tell me I'm getting nearer 43! This is mostly on short journeys (6-7 miles) and is slightly better than my old 1.7 Puma (36-37mpg). On longer journeys on A roads / motorways it creeps up noticeably to around 45mpg. All in all I'm quite satisfied with the economy.

Mine's a 1.6 Ti-VCT; when I was running it in (i.e. driving quite carefully) I'd get around 46MPG on a 200 mile trip - approx 75% motorway & 25% derestricted A roads. Trip computer claimed 53MPG. Now it's done 5,000 miles I get around 43MPG on a 300 mile motorway only trip - travelling mainly between 70 & 80MPH. Trip computer claimed 49MPG. Obviously economy's better if I drive more slowly - seems particularly good at around 60MPH but feel that it's dangerous to dawdle on the motorway, would rather keep up with the other traffic! Bashy
Hi, I'm a driving instructor and as you can guess do a LOT of stop start journeys (some in 1st gear only for an hour-car park steering lessons) and a lot of manourvres too (very slow in either first or reverse). I have been getting about 400 miles to the tank, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. It's a zetec 1.6TDCi 5 door. Only done just over 2,500 so far but more than happy. Would love to get 500 though ;-)
cj57
Zetec 1.25 done around around 500 miles of short trips on urban roads and has now crept up to 44 mpg

Just seemed easy to get a resonably accurate figure with my method. A 41.25litre fill up = 9.085 315miles on that tank = 34.67MPG I've been working it out over several tank fills the last few weeks. (I drive 100miles a day for work). As oringinally stated, my 2litre st did an actual MPG of between 29.5-32.5 hence my confusion? Cheers.
