Dragon101
Hi, i viewed a 2008 ford mondeo today. i liked the car as it is 5 door type which i really want. And it is cheap. However two things concerned me so I want to run them by people. First is that there was some rust under the bottom of car at the back. Is a little bit OK? I have taken some pictures so would appreciate advice. The second is - as these weld marks in the final three pictures? I asked the dealer and he said it wasn't (in fact he opened the booth of a focus which had the same thing). Either he is chopping a lot of cars or i am paranoid! Once again any guidance would be great. I'm keen to buy this car but don't want to do anything silly
Dragon101
Sorry - the order of the pictures seems to have changed. the first two are from inside the booth with carpet up and the final one is the edge of the floor of the booth under the spare tyre. I'm just making sure these are not weld marks.
chemfusion
I believe in the upper pictures those patches that look like welding are some gunk for sound deadening - adds weight to the sheet metal to dampen its vibrations
Dragon101
super thanks! Does anyone have an opinion on the rust in the other pictures?

As for the beige/orange stuff in the bottom of the wheel well I'd think it was some kind of sealant

I'd expect some on a 2008 car. Looks ok to me. Just get some rust curing stuff & anti corrosion paint on any rusty bits.
Dragon101
Thanks - I'll ask the dealer to do this as part of the sale.

I would only do that if you feel you can trust the dealer! It is very, very easy to plaster some underbody sealant over the top of rust, and it hides it beautifully for a while. But if not done properly, it can make the problem worse by trapping water in. I use a rust stabiliser (Kurust, Jenolite or just 24% Phosphoric acid), then Waxoyl for protected parts, or underbody seal for exposed parts. If you want to keep the car for any length of time, it might be worth getting reputable specialist to do it, if you don't relish the undoubtedly unpleasant job yourself. It will be a job worth doing on any car of this age.

btmaldon
Its only surface rust on untreated parts. An 8 year old car is going to show some signs of this. I would just waxoil all those bits yourself. Its a messy job but well worth doing.
Michael9
That mess above is on an 03...it's a !Removed! disaster, take a lot of wire brushing and underseal to cure that plus welding that hole
Dragon101
thanks Guys. Nice to be reassured on this. I've agreed to take it so should be driving it next week.

Show what happens to just about any car after about 10 years, if the rust is not controlled in time! Mine is 10 years old, and I have needed to do quite a bit of treatment around all the rear suspension parts. But it is a great shame to let a car in otherwise good mechanical condition get scrapped because the rust gets out of control.
