bILLOO
Just as I thought things were running smoothly with the new Fez arriving very soon, I just remembered today that I need to take the old number plates off my car before I trade it in! Phoned the DVLA who told me I needed to fill in a form to retain the personal plate (have filled it in) and pay £105. I'll be doing this tomorrow so my old car will have it's old number plate registered back onto it. However, I've been told that I can't part exchange this car until the new log book has been received and is taken to the dealer(!)... my new Fiesta arrives on Thursday due for driving away on Monday, does this mean I have to wait the 20-30 days for the log book to arrive or can the dealer hold my old Fiesta until the log book arrives so I can drive away the new car? Really don't want to wait 30 days where the new Fez will just be sitting there. :( Hope somebody can help! :(
amarokuk
This will depend on the dealer. They may not be happy not having the correct log book (risk of them never seeing you again after you leave with the new car) and not having the correct legal document for the vehicle puts them potentialy in a tricky position. Not a good time for DVLA either at the moment with Xmas fast approaching you may not see the docs until the new year (staff holidays and the post). I suggest you go and speak to the dealer about this they may be willing to go ahead if they know you reasonably well but to be honest I suspect most wouldn't want to complete a deal without the log book as there is all sorts of legal nonsense they have to contend with as well potentially. bILLOO
Thought this might be the case. They've requested I bring in lots of proofs of IDs tomorrow so maybe that's why? Funny enough the current Fiesta I brought was from the same dealer and I didn't have any problems with changing the number plates then! corsic-ar07
I'm off to the DVLA Local Office tomorrow to try and get my plates sorted out. I was hoping to have it all transfered by the dealer, but they said the best way was to retain it, wait for the new log book and then asign it to the new car!?! Thought the £80 transfer would have been much easier and quicker, but they've already posted the log book off.
Alan1991
Id think it would be fine, just make sure you give the dealer your log book when it arrives. I hate how they charge you a fortune to transfer a private plates.

Just transfer it off one car onto another but it seems the dealer and DVLA want us to go 'round the houses'!

Just transfer it off one car onto another but it seems the dealer and DVLA want us to go 'round the houses'! I think they just don't want to get invovled at the risk of there being complications or loss of plate! I am going to try and see if there is anything that can be done to speed up the process tomorrow by amending my details (the garage somehow put the wrong address on the V5!) and transfering the plate using the new owner section of the log book. When I transfered my plates previously, it took about a week for authorisation but it will be much longer if I have to wait for the new log book to come back just to be sent off again with amendments!! Can't you get the ownership of the car amended on the Log Book for the garage at the same time as transfering/retaining your plate? I am going to do this as in order to sell my old car privately, it needs to be insured and as my dad get's cheaper insurance, will have to transfer the ownership to him until it is sold. I'm not sure. I've been told I've got to wait for the new log book to arrive so the dealer can then write in it that they now own my old vehicle under the old registeration, which'll mean that for a few weeks I'll own two cars. Are both your cars currently in your name?
cyb
Bill – if it’s not too late take a photocopy of your current V5 before you send it off to the DVLA. Then at least you have proof (of a kind) to show the garage of details about you and the car. Regarding your returned V5 from the DVLA – You will find it quicker to put your number plate on retention than it is to swap plates – If you put your number plate on retention you should receive the V5 form back within a week, certainly no more than 10 days. The rest of the documents, proof of ownership of the number plate etc, will take a little longer. But at this time it is the V5 you need for the garage and you can change plates after you have taken ownership of the new car. InstructorPiggy
Surely you have kept the green slip tho, to prove you still own the vehicle?

I drove through to the nearest DVLA office so have sorted mine out too, just need to wait until they post the documents before I can put my plates on. Held the plate up against the car today to see what it looks like and I think it will look brilliant...can't wait!

Definately, agree on both points! DVLA were quite helpful today so should hopefully have my plates on next week. Yes it was soo good to drive there in my new car! Can't wait to drive to work tomorrow so everyone can see it. Only problem is, it keeps raining so my car keeps getting dirty! :(
