Fiesta Mk7 leaking boot

Update,

Now three weeks on,The roof channels although now sealed have made difference to the leak, the dealer found that water was coming through the double skinned roof panel, sealed this up and collected car today, ford paid 90% towards the cost and i was happy man, got home and guess what yes the boot had water in, went back to dealer and they tell me it is water that was left in the roof panel they could not get to???

Ford customer services have agreed for the car to be driven for couple of days by myself if water keeps appearing then it wil have to go to there body shop to have the roof taken off!

How's every one else doing with their's.

Had the roof channels sealed just before Christmas, along with other areas which they thought might be the problem. Two weeks ago boot was wet again!! I dont think it is as wet as before but was still wet. Waiting for dealer to arrange for car to go back in again. This will be the third time. However its pointless if they don't know what the problem is. Sealing willy nilly is not the answer. Am now in complete despair.

looking at the pic and general area have you checked behind the light cluster? its likely water is getting past a seal somewhere it will riun into that very channel common on the foicus as well other than that the boot seal itself or even drain holes on the boot ide say fropm the pics its light cluster

Make as big a fuss as you can about it to Ford. After I got my boot leak fixed, my footwells started leaking. Definetely some dodgy build quality issues. Make sure its done under warranty as it is a known fault.

Hi everyone

New to this forum, found you while doing a google search re. my wet Fiesta Mk7.

I have a Ford Fiesta 09 plate, bought in end of March 2009.

It coming up to its 2 year service time, so I dug out my paperwork. I noticed (didnt notice at the time) that there is a comment on the service work sheet (from last year) saying "water in boot". They never mentioned anything when I picked the car up.

Now I hardly use the boot, and its covered with a rubber boot carpet thing. I have removed this yesterday to find my boot carpet is soaking!

I see from the posts above that the warranty is only 1 year for this kind of thing?

Does anyone have any advice about my next step from here? Contact my dealer? Is this sort of thing likely to be pricey? Should I be pushing for the cost to be covered by Ford as it is a known fault?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Hi killiegirl,

I'd suggest you contact Ford Customer Care on 08458411111 and send them a fax or scan of the garage report from last year. The leak must have been occuring then so you have evidence that the fault occured at the latest around 1 year after the vehicle was made. Make sure you get the name of the person you speak to and demand they give you a case reference number. This makes the garage you take it to take the fault more seriously.

I had exactly the same problem as you, which I am pleased to say is now fixed. Even with torrential rain and washing the car, it is now bone dry everytime.

My Fiesta (58 plate) was approaching two years of age when I first noticed the problem (last August). I spoke to Customer Care who I have to say were extremely sympathetic and helpful. It helps if you have the service history up to date, and have had Ford cars in the past (I also had a leaky Focus a couple of years ago which I took the liberty of bringing up). It went into the garage a couple of times however before we got to the bottom of the problem. I had one leak in the passenger footwell which they attributed to my fitting of roof bars, where they suggested I had removed too much of the sealant from the holes around the drainage channels. (I'm not the only one who had this issue - http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=14810). In fairness, once they repaired the holes it did stop this leak, although I had to pay labour costs of 1hr (about £30) to have this done as it wasn't technically a manufacturing fault.

The leak in the boot persisted however. Ford offered to pay 1/2 the costs (£50) of resealing the "quarter seals" which are the the seals you can see if you open the boot and look at the top left and right just below the roof drainage channels where the water takes it's path down towards the exit channel under the boot latch. I accepted this but it made no difference to the problem, so back in it went again.

This time a "water leak specialist" from the nearest Ford Body Shop looked at it. They had the car for three days, although they only charged me £140 (about 4 hours) of labour costs. I understand he sealed "almost everything he could", which was the rear light cluster, the centre boot hinges, the drainage channels (again) and other areas which I can't remember now. I also believe the internal paneling was removed although I'm not 100% sure they did that. The difficulty with this fault seems to be that water gets into the double skin layer around the car, which then pushes back towards the rear of the car, so the place the water ends up in is not necessarily the place it enters from. However, the service manager at the body shop did seem to think the rear light cluster was the most probable culprit so I guess it was never proved 100% what the problem was.

That said, it is definitely fixed now and hasn't leaked since leaving the garage about 5 months ago.

As with all water leaks, they are not normally expensive to fix but are complex and the diagnostic work can take some time. It is worth seeing through though, as damage can occur if you do not have the problem resolved. I removed my boot carpet and pulled back the side wall carpets and stuffed two old towels in the corners whilst the problem was being diagnosed. It really helped to keep the fabrics from being spoilt.

I wouldn't go the dealer. They only sold you the car, and they didn't make it and once it is outside the warranty you will have far more sympathy from the Customer Care centre.

Good luck with yours. I'd be interested to know what happens.

I have already spoken to Ford Customer Care, who have given me a reference number & have said that before they discuss the case they need to have the leak diagnosed at the local Ford dealer.

The local Ford dealer say this will take 4 hours of labour at a cost of £315 approx. This is for diagnosis only, no repairs. Once diagnosed, Ford will be able to tell me if they are willing to contribute to the repair costs.

I simply cannot afford the £300 diagnostic cost thouugh

Hi killiegirl,

I didn't pay a penny for any of my diagnostic costs. As with your case, Ford wouldn't commit to helping me until they knew exactly what the diagnosis was, but I wasn't charged for any of that diagnosis. I assumed my local Ford dealer passed the diagnostic labour costs onto Ford directly, as no costs were quoted or charged to me once I gave my dealer the reference number. In your case, it is clear that the fault was there a year ago, when the vehicle was inside it's first year of warranty. It is also completely irresponsible of your garage to note the water leak, and for them to not bother to diagnose and fix it at the point when it would have been inside it's years warranty. For them to not even bother to tell you is a joke. I hope you have spoken to the service Manager at that garage.

I'm not entirely clear where you are with your case right now, but have you gone back to Customer Care and informed them that your local dealer is quoting you this price? In any case, £315 for four hours labour is ridiculous (please compare that with my four hours labour that I noted in my earlier post). Assuming you haven't put a roof rack on like me :) , this should be treated as a manufacturing fault as it would have come out of the garage in that state.

Given that the repair costs will probably amount to less that half of the diagnostic costs, it is Ford's responsibility to help you now, and get to the bottom of this problem.

Please let us know how you get on, as it seems that you are being treated differently from me and you should not be putting up expensive diagnostic costs on a car this new. Ford need to be consistent in their handling of these cases, as clearly this is widespread.

Kind Regards

Dan

Hi,I've got a fiesta built in feb 2012 and it's leaking into the boot on the passenger side so clearly ford haven't been bothered to rectify this issue 3 years on as people were having this issue in 2009. It's in now hopefully being fixed so looking forward to hearing what they say.

Well my car went to ford. They had it for two days and when I went to fetch it they said they couldn't find a leak. So I took him outside and showed him and surprise surprise there was a puddle of water. They then kept the car for another 3 days. They found the leak and it was coming in where the light cluster is screwed in so they sealed the one hole, I keep on checking it and so far so good, no leak. Went in my car today and a drop of water fell on me from the front interior light. Great another leak. I'd say this ones coming from the aerial hole myself. Not happy as don't expect new cars to leak especially when fiestas have been leaking for years. Don't they bother fixing these problems in factory when they find out about them? Guess not.

At nearly £80 an hour they are having a laugh surely!! Get someone with a presure washer to spray your car and see in you can locate the ingress yourself. Robbing bar stewards!

It looks like it was the seals under the two black bits that go along the roof.

It looks like it was the seals under the two black bits that go along the roof.

I have a Fiesta 1.6 Zetec 2009 and have had water pooling in the corner wells of the boot.

Fords had my car for 2 days and found it was leaking from the top corner seal joints in the bodywork at the end of the roof rubbers, I got Fords to repair them and it seems to be ok now.

Another entry point for water are the rubber seals behind the rear light clusters.

2 common points of entry I know of. The first ( same as mine was) is the roof gutters, they are stuck down with a strip type glue, under these are the welds that join the roof to the side of the car, over these welds is a sealant that looks like a weld itself. Mine had a tiny pinhole in it. Easier to fix than to find though. And the other point of entry is the tailgate hinges, that hold the tailgate to the bodywork of the car, these are sealed from the factory, and are also known to leak. I've fixed 2 now and mine, so it's turning out to be quite a big problem.

Dissapointing to read all this.

Im on my fourth straight fiesta with no leaks until now.

Its a late 2013 bought with 1700 miles on it and from day one(had it a month) its been misting up...

Its used as a driving school car and its making my life so much more difficult...

Looked under the spare and it was two inches deep...spare is rusted where its been sitting on top.

I cant afford time off to get it seen to as when it goes in i cant work.

Seriously !Removed! off with it all and i plan to test all the areas it could be this weekend and ill post any findings.

Thanks for the help.

Hi, no more leaks in my Fiesta 2009, it was the two top welds above the boot opening, but also the mostly likely cause to be the rubber seals on the rear light units, easily checked by removing 2 torx screws and the large plastic nut inside the boot liners. I would first look under the rear carpets and side liners to get an idea of where the water is coming in from.

+1 on rubber seal under the rear light.

After changing the bulb noticed some tiny stream along the bodywork inside, as back window was steaming.

Took lamp out, took rubber out, cleaned plastic, put black car sealand on plastic, rubber on top, then sealant on the rubber (just in case, to make sure rubber sticks to the body of the car) and screw in the right back firmly.

So far so good

Looks as though I'll have to have a good look around (inside) my Tit when I collect it on Sat. Any water anywhere and they can keep it, unfit for purpose. 12 months water ingress warranty is a joke, cheeky astards. I said elsewhere, when I collected my 85 XR2 the gearbox was gerfukdenbroken, try as I might I only got a recon out of 'em.

Hello. I am new to this forum and have been reading about this discussion with much interest. I have the same leak on my newly acquired 2010 Fiesta. I am pulling my hair out trying to get it sorted. I have had a local garage put sealer in the boot which cost me £120 and of course it still happens. It does seem to be that water is being stored somewhere and chucked out when there is no more room to store it! Any updates on the above comments would be much appreciated. My whole car feels and smells damp all the time :( . Please help!!!!

2015 fiesta had water in the boot when I picked it up new. I questioned it and was given a reasonable explanation but 2 months down the line and more water in the boot :(

Took the boot apart and found the water coming from the light so fingers crossed I've sorted it.
