Nikkk
Hello, I need your help ladies and gents! I recently bought a Mondeo 54 plate, 1.8l petrol, 70k miles, serviced every year, 14k miles ago a new clutch. Everything seems fine. I have a minor issue, which I worry that might become a larger one - when the car is cold it sometimes has difficulties getting into gear (1st) I have read a lot of topics online about that and there seems to be different opinions on it. Considering the clutch was changed (which I hope is true on the service book) what could it be? All fluids seem to be in place and in the right quantity, Once I drive for a few miles, the problem seems to go away or is at least rarely there. Still I am worried about the gear box or clutch, regardless. It could be just me having a new car with different gear box, but still even with the clutch all the way down it is difficult to get into 1st sometimes. Can you please advise? Thank you in advance! Jonro2009
Hi Nik You said that all looks well and the fluids levels are all correct as far as you can see. If all the moving parts are pretty new then have you thought about changing the fluid? As you say the problems gets better after a bit of heat gets into the engine which to me suggests once the fluid warms up it is smoother, for lack of a better word. It could also be The synchromesh for first if there has been frequent grinding? I'd start with a fluid change and see if that helps. I'm no mechanic it's just things I've heard along the way. Nikkk
Hi, so I went to a mechanic and he confirmed it is a problem with the synchromesh on the gearbox. He said they cannot fix it themselves but I should go to a specialist on gearboxes and it will proably be 300 - 400 + labour, which I don't want to imagine how much will be. Either way my question is - do you think I can drive like that (without fixing it) and for how long? I have to add that the car is moving just fine, just has difficulties getting into first gear sometimes, which is fixed by getting into second and then first Cheers
pragmatix
As I said, common problem and as long as you can live with putting it in another gear first then no bother, my current car has been like this for the last 140k can't comment on the 40 k before that as I didn't own the car
