These common rail diesels will often fire up ok without plugs, but will then idle very rough, or stall, until the head warms up a bit. Below about 5C seems to be bad for this. My 1.8 is rough & smokey for a minute after a freezing start, I have found one (maybe 2) plugs are faulty. Got replacements on order. To test the plugs, they will probably need to be disconnected from the wiring, and each should register just about short circuit (under 1 ohm) on a multimeter.
