Rip Off

My car is in for service at Sandicliffe, Stapleford at the moment.   I asked them to check the tracking and the quoted me £50.   What a rip off.   I can get it done for £20 at Mr Tyre.

Another part of the rip off:   When my car was MOT'd a month ago it was reported that the brake pads were 50% word.   Sandicliffe reckon that they are now 75% worn.   So I've got through 25 % of my brake pads in a month?   I don't think so.

Should've asked how much pad was left and how they measured them! Bet they'd have stuttered and muttered!

I used to have a Granada Scorpio 4x4 and the brake pads had sensors in them.   When they needed changing a light came on on the dashboard.   At a service, Ford main dealer insisted the pads needed changing and I pointed out that the light wasn't on so I didn't have them changed.   The light came on two years later.   I'm a retired police driver so I am very light on the brakes.

they should have used a pad thickness tool which you can use with wheels on

I'm sure you'll get a top quality wheel alignment job for £20.  Not.  That'll be a cheap job from the knuckle draggers at then tyre and exhaust place.

I must agree. I once took my corsa for new tyres to a local place. The guy in the garage said that I needed my tracking done and it would cost fifteen pounds. I stood and watched him wind the track rod two revolutions anticlockwise then two revolutions clockwise!  Following a huge argument the guy removed my new tyres, put the old ones back on and told me where to go. They didn't even put any alignment gear on the car to check it! You get what you pay for.

The Mr Tyre people did the wheel alignment for me for £20.   They had all the alignment gear and did a professional job.

When my fiesta went into Bristol Street Ford for the glow plug recall they gave me a list of things which were apparently needing doing ASAP.

Car was Mot'd a month later with no advisorys at all, and the garage even told me everything would be good for another year at least. I think sometimes it's just a scare tactic to get you paying for the service.

You need new or nearly new tyres, or its not worth bothering.

To do it properly the tyres need to be set to an exact cold pressure.  Ride height needs to be checked against the book , because if springs have sagged with age/mileage it'll be off (a skilled engineer can compensate the figures for it) because the suspension moves in an arc, which alters the angle at which the wheel is sitting - every single person I have watched, bar one, never bothers with those two steps, so fails straight away.  You man at Fred in A Shed Tyres, or Bombsite Exhuasts, is almost guaranteed absolutely to not do this.

If you're really anal, or if you have a race or track day car, you'll have it done with the drivers weight simulate in the seat so the suspension is at the height at which the car is driven when the FWA is set.

You will never, ever get a tip top FWA anywhere outside of a good quality accident repair specialist, or a Motorsport/race car engineers.  I know I'm very anal because I studied Automotive Science and Engineering at Uni like my Dad before me, but most Fred in a Sheds are absolute butchers.

i remember having to load up the car with 4 passengers to do tracking on a 4wd suzuki swift saloon many years ago. that was the load factor required.

Jethro_Tull   My man at 'Fred in A Shed Tyres', as you insist on calling him, did the job properly then as he checked the tyre pressures and got me to sit in the car.   The tyre were  a month old.   You seem to think that you're the only person who knows anything about cars.

I have the equipment and knowledge to do front wheel alignment myself, in 3D if necessary (useful for tweaking my Westfield), so while I know less than my professors I'm pretty confident I know more than you ever will.

Having been driving for over 60 years and having rebuilt engines, gearboxes, back axles on both cars and motorbikes I doubt that.   Ever heard of a Burman gearbox?   You must have 'cause you know everything don't you.

My all time favourite was the Wilson Epicyclical Pre-selective gearbox, no reverse gear just a transfer box. 80 MPH forward, 80 MPH going backwards.

Yes, my old WD Matchless ran a Burman box, but that's not really relevant. As stef123 requests I'm not going to play with someone who seems determined to argue. It's not fair on the other forum users that you're having a public pop at me and polluting a thread that they have to read.

You got a problem with me then pm me direct and I'll be happy to delete it.

So get it done at Mr Tyre.

The word "car" = rip off.

Alternative meaning = we haven't a clue and neither do we care.
