Hi, my problem is horn - it not working. Point is I hit a rock (a big one) LHS front so I though it my be damaged. When I change dashboard I checked horn - it was working but couple days ago it stopped. Unfortunetly it gonna fail MOT test which I`ve got tomorrow (lol). I change relay, I change the fuse - still nothing. When alarm goes on horn it`s working but when I press it it`s not. What can be a problem then?

Thanks for any advice.

Right, I took horn out and connect straight to battery - it`s working. I don`t hear any clicks going from relay, even when I swap it with other one (I thinks from A/C). I change the fuse for new one and still nothing. For the records: I was changing dashboard and steering wheel. Maybe problem is clock spring? Which wire going to horn? Is it a chance to fit different one passing faulty wire loom?

depends how good you want the fix to be and how desperate you are for a quick fix . fix a button somewhere on dashboard or cowling?

I had a car a few years ago where there was a problem with the horn button. so what I did was wired the horn to the washer button (so it was handy to use when the need arose - as long as i remembered where it was) and I then put a separate button on dashboard for the washer.

I don't know what an MOT tester would consider to be an acceptable location for a horn button.  In the 70s/80s it was very common for the horn to be a button on end of indicator stalk and not on the steering wheel. I have not checked if MOT manual mentions how handy the button has to be for quick pressing

just looked in mot manual for horn button:

reason for failure: The horn control missing, insecure or not readily accessible to the driver.

so it just needs to be "readily accessible to the driver" .   I do appreciate that it is not desirable to have it somewhere different where the thinking time in finding it causes delay

Right I finally done it (and pass MOT, yay!). Turns out it was a clock spring. Very common issue like a ford specialist said. Here is information what I`ve got from him if someone need it.

Hi there hope i can be of some help to you.

Im assuming that your horn doesn't work with what you are asking, now what controls the relay is fuse 1.7 15amp in battery junction box which is the forth small fuse up on the left hand side this should be live with the ignition on, this feeds pins 1 and 3 of the horn relay which is the end relay on the left on the first row of 4 black relays in the battery junction box.

This relay is earthed at pin 2 by the horn contacts in the steering wheel which runs through the clock spring behind the steering wheel and once it is earthed power is suppled to the horn at pin 5 of the horn relay.

Rather than buying a horn relay i would swap it with the relay next to it as they are both the same, if the horn still doesn't work then here are a few common faults.

The horns them selves used to fail alot because of the position they are in they collect water.

The clock springs behind the steering wheels use to also fail and cause horn failure, a quick way to test to see if the horn clock spring has failed is to look at the bottom of the steering coloum just below the cowls and there will be two multiplugs one will be yellow and the other black and both will have 2 wires to each, now DO NOT touch the yellow plug as it is for the air bag system you need to bridge the two wires in the black plug and if the horn sounds then the clock spring as failed.

Hope this is ok for you, with the information i have supplied you shouldn't have a problem finding whats wrong, if you need anymore help then please ask.
