Myless
Hi all! Looking for some advice about my ST225 (mk2), see the video below. As you can tell it is making a horrible noise while idling and you can also hear it when you accelerate about about 3k, any ideas what it could be? I had someone mention the liners possibly being cracked which I have no idea how much would cost to repair/ replace or where to go! So any help is much appreciated! Ryan_Tango
Might be the tappets? Other than that I'm not sure.
james_60
It should not be that loud. Was that a hot engine or a cold engine. Also, Was the correct oil put in at the last service, Is the engine cover around the oil filler supposed to have a break in it ? How many miles has it done This engine DOES have Variable Valve Timing. I suspect the Variability system has failed or is failing and that you should take it to ford for it to be checked Bearing in mind this is a Volvo 5 pot engine (Volvo B5254T3) Jamie

Yes correct oil that the manual suggests was used. I'm not sure about the engine cover having a break in it? Mileage is at 92k, also found out that the previous owner had the car remapped by a local "specialist" if that might contribute. This is the engine currently now, sorry for the late reply been away working offshore.
Gizza11
I'm no expert but does sound like a bit camy so could be tappits or one of the cams. or cam timing I'm 99% sure it not the liners as you suggest. It des't sound like bottom end more top.As suggested even if the engine cover did have a break in it as it looks in your pics that would be nether here or there and make no difference to anything as it is purely cosmetic plastic or is it just a bit of oil running down from the filler. The remap won't do that, mine has one of biggest maps with out major engine mods ..It normally doesn't sound like at all if the engine is hot or cold these engines run really sweet at both.Best thing is to get it checked by an expert then take it from there.

Someone from the local ford dealer garage is coming over today to have a look, thank you all for your help! Will update progress when I get a solid diagnosis. By the way my Avatar is my engine having the block mod done.
Myless
Update: Engine fired up and 3 seconds later he was shouting to turn it off! He said it's bottom end, wouldn't know exactly unless it was stripped, but the damage can be more then just that due to metal fillings which could potential be in the system, which could damage a wide range of things like the turbo he said. Also going on from what I said before about the remap that was done, he said everything was just put to max so was a cheap rip off remap and he has had other STs in the garage with engine problems due to their maps from that "specialist". He's given me a contact who specialises in rebuilds and for a rebuild with the block mod and belts done is £1800 so I think this is what I'm going to do! Gizza11
Oh bad luck on that. it didn't sound like bottom end but actually not being there it can be deceptive. I would go for the bock mod as well as you are having a rebuild will give the engine some extra strength for moding later. Just a thought as you are having a more or less strip down to do the bottom end you could consider a forged set of pistons and rods then you could go for some major power as per the RS can 400bhp +, but this may not be what you want at the mo and also the cost .I had my remap and mods done by Collins in Congleton by Stoke on Trent a CP340 that is as about big as you can go with out changing things like the turbo and forged engine parts never had any problem at all with it and TBH has plenty of power

Has anybody had the same issue and found out what the issue was? I’m pretty sure it’s top end issue like a broken lifter (guess)
Chaz84
Sounds like a burnt valve maybe had the same noise in myst150 track car it was re mapped few months before a valve burnt out it maybe not saying it is just what my problem was
Chaz84
A wouldn’t turn it back on id leave it for a garage to look at ever time you turn it on it may cause more damage have you had the block mod done on the car ?
Chaz84
Focus st are bad for hgf failure block mod is too add shims to the engine to help preventing it from hgf
Frowma
If you have a tapping sound from the engine and it stays when you rev it but just gets faster then it is normally from the top end, cam / tappets etc. If you have a knocking sound that gets faster as you rev it but then disappears that points to the bottom end (the big ends could be worn, the crank is moving slightly inside the big end bearings, eventually they'll wear so much that one bearing will slide down into the other and seize up solid.). If it is the bottom end you'll need the engine stripped down, the crankshaft reground and new big end bearings 😞

I thought bottom ends but it’s more of a really pinging noise not so much a knocking noise. No black smoke when I was driving. Off road and I’m currently stripping down. i was hoping the guy who posted the video would let us know what the root cause was as it is exactly same sound as mine. I will stripped down and post the root cause so it may help others.
