It's looking more likely that the poor starting problems on the son in laws focus is the head gasket.

I've not changed a head gasket in over 25 years, and certainly never a twin cam, so I've a few tools to buy before I attempt the job.

 

Do the cams have to come out of the head to get to the bolts, or can I remove the head with cams in situ.

When undertaking a job like this you would be well advised to get a Haynes manual. Although Haynes is often deficient in the details one really wants to know it does describe the engine overhaul procedures quite well and lists all the required torque settings and tightening angles.
