FMC
I've noticed several potholes gaining in size and new ones appearing this past week - it's becasue as water freezes it expands, so ice will rip apart already fragile tarmac in broken roads and footpaths :( No doubt councils and/or government will expect car owners to fund these extra repairs through extra road taxes or fuel duty, yet the taxes we already pay haven't ensured sufficient gritting to minimise these problems or proper, timely repairs in the first place
MarkyR
Potholes are purely due to incorrect road maintenance, utility's company's not filling holes in correctly. It seems to be becoming a massive problem, I remember watching a documentary all about it and apparently the laws were changed relating to the holes dug up and well I don't think they are now monitored as much so this is the outcome. Council's like to be cheap too. If you build the road properly in the first place then look after it and maintain it correctly you won't get these problems. Flic
The roads by me are just awful now. It's like driving around in a third word country. Our council is so cheap and stupid. The never resurface the roads that actually need doing and the ones that are beyond repaid they go and put speed humps down! Go figure. LeeZetecS
I assumed everywhere else would be like that. I'v already hit a pothole at night on a fairly fast road, which was really nasty! TBH i'm waiting for problem to rear it ugly head. I'm sick of driving around like a F1 warm up lap <_< Potholes are indeed becoming a massive problem, must be the ice causing them. Jonny87
I am also in Stevenage. Those potholes at the end of Gunnels Wood are horrific. Where abouts are you? Also what are the roads like as i'm about to venture out. Never see the 602 as quiet as it is today....
jack
Council round here, resurfaced a stretch of road about half a mile long. Lovely and smooth when it was finished. A couple of months later, contractors dig a trench along it and lay a Water or Gas pipe under it. Unbelievable! Why couldn't this be done at the same time. The roads a pile of crap now. One more thing, over this cold snap, none of our roads have been gritted. I only live in a small town on the East Coast, whats it been like for the rest of you? I tried that myself but found the round edges of the kettle just smoothed the snow over kinda like icing a big Fiesta cake. Could be my technique, I'll try again tomorrow. amarokuk
The noise my folding mirrors made this morning when I unlocked my car was sickening! It took me ages to open my door and then neither of the windows would open! First thing I did when the cold weather started was deactivate the auto folding mirrors to try and stop the motors being damaged if they froze up. I drove for the first time today and no drama at all the fiesta coped with ffrsh snow, class like compacted ice and partially defrosted road without any issues. i have a 1.4 Titainium 16" wheels with the fromt tyres over inflated about 20%
studly
The street where i live is terrible, this morning after a 20min battle in -15c temps to get the door open i couldn't stop at the junction 2 streets away and ended up slamming into the kerb and destroyed a wheel :( . Only steelies but still annoying as that's around 50 squid for another from fordies and then refitting the tyre and tracking check costs at my local tyre place. Even more annoying is none of the streets around me have not seen even the merest sprinkling from the gritter's.

Jethores
I know it is not a relif, but it may comfort some of you living with the harsh condititons on the British islands these days. Here in Norway we have had what we call a good old winter, with temp down to 25 c below for more than 3 weeks. Lots of snow. The most important thing to remember when driving in these conditions is winter tyres. The difference between wintertyres and summertyres are lifesaving. I would never dare to drive on winterconditions with summertyres. My MK7 works fine, but are looking forward to spring temp. We cannot expect that before April. Winter greetings from Norway. studly
Had my tracking checked with the full size spare wheel fitted and thankfully it looks like i've escaped with just the cost of a new steelie and refitting.

Problem we have in the UK Jethores, is that it is illegal to use snow chains or studded winter tyres on the public highway! I wish this stupid, backwards UK government would wake up and get its priorities right! Instead of fannying around worrying about grit (or lack of it) they could be advising people on how to use snow chains, even if we'd have to remove them when we eventually found a road without snow on! Kasper-N
I think you'd call what we have here, extreme temperatures. It's coping quite well though, no doors freezing shut etc. Sometimes the windows get freezed stuck. I wish the heated windscreen heated up a bit more and faster as it takes at least 4-5 minutes to completely melt all the ice. -34:
