Rear shock absorber knock?

Hi - I have an annoying knock coming from the rear passenger side shock absorber area - I'm not sure if it's the shock or just a loose mounting. I've had a quick look under it and the bottom mounting bolt for the rear shock is obvious and seems tight, but I'm finding it harder to see how the top of the shock is attached (and whether the knock is due to a loose bolt etc)...

If anyone knows how the top of these are attached, it would help as I can then check to see if it is just a loose top mounting, or if not, then perhaps I need a new pair of shocks.

I'd rather check the top mounting first!

Any advice (constructive) welcome.

Thanks.

Hi Woodie as you may have read in other post I've got the car back and a knock from the back end was one of the thing i reported but bringing it back I'm sorry to say i can still hear something to be honest i don;t think they've even looked at it and have come to the same conclusion as with the dashboard rattle its something that little can be done about. However if you do find a solution please post a thread i will be checking back every now and the or leave a message in my private message's sorry i can't be of any more help to you.To be honest if i could turn back the clock and know what i know now i would never have bought a fusion.I have paid more for this car than any other in the past and its the worst car I've owned I've had a fiesta and an Escort and to be quite frank they could both blind the Fusion on just about every level. <_<

I've got an Escort 1.8 diesel, when it's empty there is a constant rattle even on what seems a smooth road, if I put a couple of concrete slabs in it, it goes quiet, I've pointed it out to to the MOT man but he says he can't find any fault & I have to live with it, lucky it's an old banger & I never paid much for it. But to its credit, it's never let me down even in all that cold weather we had recently.

I've got the same problem. I installed the handling package from Steeda.. new shocks, struts, springs, sway bar, and strut brace, but the rattle in my rear end has gotten worse. It's been bothering me for a while. I pulled off the wheel.. checked the top shock mount. It's tight. I've checked inside the trunk.. nothing loose there. The rattle is progressively getting worse and it's driving me nuts. Don't get me wrong.. I love the car. But I'm probably gonna trade it for a new Stang in the next year or two. The car has to make it that far first. I've had NO OTHER PROBLEMS with this car.

Since this pic, I've also installed the chrome fog light trim and put chrome pinstriping on the eyelids.

May sound stupid had a horrible knocking in the back of mine only when empty turned out to be the spare wheel loose in its holder fitted some thick wadding for it to sit on tightened it down. made sure the jack and tools were tight, and its been quiet ever since... :P

Oh and P.S.

The rear shock tops are behind the rear seats in the boot space behind the boot side panels. I saw them when fitting Tow bar electrics...regards Cartman690...

You have to remove the cover around the wheel arch which is held in with a series of round clips, at the very top of the shock there are two bolts at either side, remove these and that is the top of the shock free, release the bolt at the bottom remembering the nut does not move and stays(just the long bolt). In my fusion both shocks were gone and everything above that had perished(bush and sleeves), I recommend a replacement from Ford as you get everything complete including new bolts and it is all built into a new mounting cup and bushes. I found motor factors could only supply a shock on its own which is useless as you will see there is loads more to it in mounting at the top and turned out to be cheaper too not to mention it takes about 10 mins to refit when complete.

hope this helps

Hi

Hate to state the obvious but as this is a UK based forum the Fusion in the US is not the same car as the UK.

Tends to be little old ladies running about in them here.

No need for customising!!!

Hi Everyone,

Almost forgotten about my original post! Anyway I thought I'd post an update in case anyone else has this issue...

The knock came from the passenger rear whenever the car went over a bump in the road. I removed the shock absorber and it looked fine, remounted it, drove down the road and the knock was still there.

By luck my neighbour's son works for Ford and was next door that day so I asked him around to take a look. He checked the shock absorber mounts and they were OK and he said he had come across this issue at work with a couple of customer cars.

It turns out it was the rear seat latch knocking. He said the garage fix for this is:

Fold forward the rear back and this will expose the metal hoop that the seat latch engages on. Simply wind a couple of turns of PVC tape around this where the latch grabs it. Done!

It's now six months on and it's been perfect ever since. Sounded just like the shock absorber, but it wasn't.

Hope this helps someone.
