Hello,

Brand new here and i'm after some advice as I've seen some conflicting information when frantically googling for an answer. I have a 14 plate Focus Zetec S 1.0 Ecoboost. The car is on 31k miles and was just fully serviced yesterday. drove fine all day, no smoke or temp gauge increase then suddenly loads of smoke from the engine bay. Pulled over straight away and noticed coolant spraying all over my engine and the coolant reservoir below minimum. Car has now been recovered by the RAC and sitting outside the house :(

What i'd like to know is the following:

1. Is the damaged part in the picture the updated re-called part? i see that the 2012-2013 Focus had a recall but when checking etis, my car has nothing flagged.

2. From what I have read this is a common problem with the 1.0 Ecoboost. What have you done when this failed? did it go back to main dealer ?

3. Is this the correct part? https://www.fordpartsuk.com/shop/ford_focus_overflow_hose_10l_3_cylinder_fox_engine_2012-2014_f_1829702.htm

Here is a little video of it when it failed:

Yep that’s the part that has been updated.

Have a look on Facebook and search for the group Ford Focus Ecoboost 1.0L Turbo Zetec Faulty Coolant Pipe Head Gasket

Ask to join the group and when you do have a look at the pinned post as it will explain exactly how you go about getting Ford to pay for a new engine ‘if’ your engine has cooked itself. You ‘might be lucky’ but from reading the Facebook posts a few have had a similar situation only to find later that the head gasket has also ‘went’!

Thanks for getting back to me. I've ordered the part and going to get a local garage to fit and check the engine via a compression test.

fingers crossed !

from your images it looks like you have the later modified one on your car . if you have issues after fitting hose and topping up coolant , a phone callto your local ford dealer is in order and they will help

If I were you I’d be getting in touch with Ford and not letting your local garage touch it. As I said, that Facebook page explains everything. Your local garage may replace the part but there’s no guarantee you haven’t already damaged the engine.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to speak to ford on Monday (Days in Swansea) and see what they suggest also. The car is outside the house at the moment and no way of me moving it.

I'm going to get the hose replaced - looks like a 5 minute job for a mechanic. Coolant flush and keep a very close eye on the levels. Would it also be worth checking the coolant reservoir for leaks and the water pump ?

I honestly would contact Ford before doing anything else as they may not honour any warranty or goodwill if the car has been repaired by someone else.

I remember a thread not so long ago on here and I think it was for the same thing. Guy limped or towed it to an independent round the corner who did some work but did not fully solve the problem and Ford refused to cover the full repair due to this. Result was a £4k bill that the owner had to shoulder. It's on here somewhere...

He’s logged onto the Fb page now, hopefully he goes straight to Ford!

Well he came on the forum for advice, he either listens or he doesn't listen.  One of which will likely end up costing him £4000+ out of is own pocket.

  • 4 years later...

To all you Fordies out there advising 'trust Ford' - Let's not forget that Ford was sued through the courts for the appalling way they treated people who bought the LW Mk2 Powershift.

When the P.O.S. started playing up, Ford offered a ridiculously low payback against the purchase of another Ford vehicle, and this was on a brand new car to start with.

The fact they were FORCED, on pain of even greater  corporate fines (Au$10M here in Australia) to actually honour the required consumer warranties speaks more about the Ford business ethic than anything I've heard here!

My wife actually owns one of these junkers, and it goes in for the clutch adjustment every 12 weeks or so, and as long as we keep it 'Dealer Serviced' the dear lads at Ford are forced to keep repairing it - FORCED being the operative word here.

Thank you so much for waking up a four year old thread to tell us that you are not a fan of Ford.

This being the Ford owners club, you will tend to find people who like Ford vehicles here, the people that don't like Ford tend to buy another make and are more likely to visit the owners club relating to that preference.
