How do I tell if the car had been remapped

Hey everyone, just asking if there's any clues to knowing if a 1.6 tdci engine on a mk6.5 fiesta has had a mountune remap. The previous owner said its been done by one of the previous owners and he lost the rolling road print out.

Getting a dyno reading done yourself is the only certain way.

Or drive the same model/engine car as yours, which hasn't been remapped, and see how you feel.

The only telltale sign I had when my Grande Punto Sporting was remapped was it belched black smoke on hard acceleration.  More so than normal for a diesel.  Mind you, this was remapped from just over 130bhp to nudging 190.  The 1.9JTD 8 valve engine is immensely tuneable.

I wasn't aware Mountune remapped the diesel Mk6?  Only the ST150 on the Mk6 I thought?

There shouldn't be any extra smoke from a decent remap, and if it is a Mountune map, they're usually pretty conservative so unlikely to notice power difference without a direct comparison.  You could ask Mountune, they'll probably still have your reg on file if they did it.  Or as above, go for a dyno/rolling road test.

I asked mountune a few months ago. They asked for the reg then after asked for the vin number. After that didn't get no reply. Since then I kind of am squeamish asking again as I don't want to get upset finding out I was lied to. The car at one point did have a private plate I think called 'nick ST' so never know if that owner had it remapped and the information was stored under that reg. Honestly I never seen any black smoke from the car. There's white smoke when starting in the morning but I think that could be excess diesel in one of the cylinders caused by a possible leaky injector as it has a very strong diesel smell.

Depending on how aggressive a map is, you may not see black smoke. Black smoke in a diesel is usually soot which is a byproduct of combustion - diesels just produce more than petrol. As a third party remap will be all about increasing power, and because the only real way to get that power is to get more bang in the cylinder, more soot is to be expected.

Car makers are always trying to find a balance between all sorts of demands - performance, cleanliness, fuel economy, etc etc. The third party remap will just be more performance oriented than the manufacturer's. They may also raise the maximum for the rev limiter, or even remove the limiter altogether if they're a cowboy. This will create more soot in itself.

Mountune aren't all about increasing power, they are 'safe' maps which allow the owner to keep the Ford warranty.

Also, you just increase the boost to compensate for the extra fuel...black smoke is essentially just wasted fuel, you can burn that with a bit more air.  Moving the limiter on a diesel is pointless, they make max torque way before the limiter.  My 1.6 is mapped to 140 from 110, I specifically asked for a 'safe' map to ensure the fuel system and drivetrain were not going to be compromised, no smoke and no limiter change, it's been on for 20k now without wrecking anything.

Ah ok...must be several Nicks with ST's then lol.

So got the guts to message mountune again and ask about if the car has been remapped. Sadly the car hasn't been remapped😭😭. Gets me wondering now if the other stuff mentioned the last owner said he did he actually did.

One question I may ask is how do you check the condition of the clutch? It feels similar to my previous car when we changed the clutch. There's no slipping from what I can tell.

Not really any way to check a clutch properly while it's in the car, as long as it's not slipping or juddering and feels ok, it's probably good!

Thankfully not really upset about finding out it's not remapped. I'd say I've become comfortable with it and thankfully it drives nicely. Other stuff which was mentioned I cannot tell until looking through the bonnet. He's a picture of what has been done to the car when it was advertised.

I doubt they did the flywheel...they're single mass on the Fiesta...

Injector seals - well as long as they're not leaking it doesn't really matter whether they were done or not.

Cambelt and pump is the major one though, have you got the receipt for those?

No receipt for any of those sadly. When the injectors get sent off to get reconditioned me and dad may check the timing belt. Since the day we bought it we noticed it would be a little lumpy on idling and puff white smoke for a few seconds when started after been sit for several hours. At first thought it was glow plugs but after changing those the symptoms still persist. Injector seals thankfully are doing there job. I did see dried black diesel under the cover which covers the injectors so they were changed at one point. Might also look at the oil feed pipe as dad saying just to make sure the turbo is getting enough oil. Apart from that the car is lovely and drives well. Did a service a few months back and checked the oil not long ago and it hardly used any

I'd say the first few months of owning a car is worrying as your not sure how it would be and if the previous owner might of tried to hide anything serious.

So did the previous owner forge the "Mountune remap with 'certificate and rolling road print out' "?

He said it had been done by one of the owners and he said he lost the print out. Honestly don't really care thankfully however want to check the timing belt. Clutch doesn't slip which is a good sign however hope it doesn't go for the time I have the car.

Been looking at a place which specialise in tuning just the HDI engines. The engines made by Peugeot Citroën PSA group (1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 diesel engines). They do a stage 1 remap which ups the power from 90 to 115hp and torque from 205nm to 260nm. They also do a stage 1+ which gives 120hp and 275nm however you need at least a decat :whistling1:. They've tested these on their own cars to make sure its safe and they been working on the 1.6 diesel engine for around 6 years.

Would that be Steve at HDI-Tuning?

Yeah, he did the map for my Focus and I've used his maps on a few 2.0 HDi Peugeots as well.

Wow lol can I ask a few things as I'm really considering sending my ECU to them in the summer.

1) was there noticeable difference in power and MPG after the remap?

2) did you get the car dynod before getting it mapped?

3) was there any issues you had? How many miles you've done since the remap?

I've been talking to Steve and you can tell he knows his stuff but wanted to ask someone who's got a map from him.

Will decide to do the stage 1 or 1+ decat :whistling1:
