if the garage done any work atall to the car & it came back to you with the noise after they messed with it i would make sure they fix it pronto and would not wait a week or 2 and hope it goes away. man up & get the muppets at the garage to sort it if they caused it

sounds like you need to take out the bulb holder & disconnect the wire plug as they sometimes gum up and also check the bulb contacts as they degrade with age and damp.
i usually apply wd40 on all of the connections and make sure the contacts are clean. then refit bulbs etc and try the lights.

brake shoes/pads wear depending on the type of driving. town or city driving will wear them down quick.
i get about 28 months out of mine on the fronts then about 36 months rear there abouts.its down to all the stop starts
for lights etc so 2 yrs on the pads is about usual i recon.try your local halford service center as they do them for life.
so you pay once & they wear out they do them for nothing next time.

from memory there is no electrics that would effect the engine or no electrics atall by the filler cap or that area.
seems more a coincidence.
