btmaldon hit the nail on the head.It's not driving on the "wrong" side of the road that is the problem it's RHD - Gear changing is pretty automatic for me with the right hand but I need to think for a split second when doing it with the left hand - I'm looking forward to it

Thanks for all your replies. Yes, I have booked lessons with a driving school.
If you think that drivers in the U.K. are bad you should try driving in Spain, or worse still, Portugal. I once did a tour around Portugal with two friends from the U.K. neither of whom fancied driving on the right. I drove the 600 or so miles myself. Never again

I have a diesel Fiesta Zetec and it's great.
A Ford Fiesta would be a good car for a new driver. A Peugeot 206 is another good option.
I'm only joking but years ago a friend advised me that if a woman wants to learn to drive don't stand in her way
