Fitting Dab/fw/mw/lw Roof Aerial And Cabling Routing - Help!

12 December 2012 - 08:52 PM

Last weekend I started fitting a Sony CDX-DAB700U head unit into my Focus Zetec S mk2.5.

I mangaed to fit the head unit into the car, the CD and stalk controls work fine but the FM/MW/LW and DAB radio are dead. Part of the reason I wanted a change was the poor quality radio reception I was experiencing with the original unit.

As it looks like the issue is due to the aerial and cabling, I have now purchased a Kinetic DRA-6001 aerial bundle with low loss cabling for both the FM/MW and LW and DAB radio, which I would like fitted asap.

I am not that much of a practical person and am not great at reading wiring instructions, but can follow something I see and am more than willing to have a go.

I have had a quick try at removing the drivers side front pillar cover, but don't want to pull too hard and break any holding clips. Does anyone know if there is a pull and slide knack? or is it just a straight forward yank and pull to remove the pillar?

I have found a guide on DAB radio retro fit on fordwiki - Can anyone tell me if that is similar to what I will need to do?

I guess, what I'm trying to do is save £50 -100 on labour costs if I do it myself.

Any helpful comments, thoughts or pearls of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Removing Wing Mirror Covers - Focus - 2.5 Mark

02 December 2012 - 02:27 PM

Just had a spare 5 mins to have a look at how to remove the colour coded wing mirror covers, before thinking about carbon wrapping them to match my front lip.

I looked in the manual - turned the mirror right down to the bottom as far as it would go and think i could see the clip that holds the back on. But couldn't see how to remove.

What is best to use - a flat headed screwdriver? - Is this the only clip securing the back in place? How much force is needed and applied in which direction?

Any other tips would be fab.

Thoughts On Dab In Car Radio? New Headunit?

06 November 2012 - 09:35 PM

Having had my car now for about a month I am finding the standard headunit is a real let down. I struggle to get a reception even for the major FM radio stations and the general sound quality is poor. MW stations are just not worth bothering with.

I am now considering buying a new headunit that comes with DAB radio, but would like to know if anyone has any experience of DAB headunits, and whether or not it is worth it at the moment.

I have seen the DAB units that tune into the existing FM frequencies but am not convinced this is the way to go due to poor quality reception and the added bulk in and around the dashboard.

I have narrowed my search down to this headunit :-

Seems like it has lots of features and comes with an internal windscreen ariel for the DAB that can be fitted quickly and easily.

I think I would also need a new facia. Am I right in thinking this would fit? (Ford Focus Zetec S - mark 2.5)

Finally, am I right in thinking I would also need a wiring harness to connect new headunit into car? If so, would this do?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions that you are able to give.

New Owner - Focus Zetec S '10' Plate

15 October 2012 - 08:03 PM

Hi everyone

Just thought i'd post a few pics of my 'new' car. I picked it up just over a week ago now and I am really pleased with it so far. I have been looking at lots of different posts about little tweaks that can be made here and there to improve styling and looks and would like to ask opinions on a couple of small ideas I am contemplating.

1. Adding 'S' badges to front grille and back boot. If 'S' was to be added to the back, where would the ideal placement be? - Under the Zetec or after the Zetec?

2.The addition of rear parking sensors. Has anybody had any dealings with www.parkingsensors.co.uk ? Basic DPS400 model looks decent for less than a dealership fitting.

3. Modifying the silver bonnet lip trim in some way. Have heard of people suggesting carbon wrapping or painting it the colour of the car. Personally I 'm not sure if carbon wrapping it will sit with the look of the rest of the car. Has anybody painted the silver lip trim colorado red? If so, any pics?

4. I have also seen the dmb gel overlay badges, may fancy red background with silver lettering. Are they the correct size for my model of Focus?

Sorry, if my questions have been answered a thousand times before, but any positive response would be greatly appreciated. I am sure that like minded people will agree that it is the small details, that if you get them right, set your car apart from the rest.

Also, at some stage before winter sets in will be looking into replacing standard bulbs for better, but have seen the different threads on this topic, so will make a choice soon.

Many thanks in advance
