Finally Replaced My Gauge Faces

12 June 2014 - 08:10 PM

Took a couple of attempts, but I now have functioning gauges and the faces are not flaking off! First I ordered a whole new instrument panel from an old XR3i, but it turns out the inner workings were changed completely around '88, so only the speedo was useable. I disassembled that and swapped my original odometer in to keep the mileage.

Luckily, it turns out that the fuel/temp gauge faces are nearly exactly the same for early Mk5 Escorts, so I was able to get one from a breaker's yard, and after some careful trimming it could be fitted.

Here are some pictures of the end result:

Mk4 Escort Idle Problem

22 March 2014 - 06:46 PM

Every time it rains, the idle speed of my Escort drops really low to around 300-400 rpm until it is nearly cutting out. Usually it idles fine but whenever it starts to rain it seems to do this. Anyone know what could be causing this or how it can be rectified? It has the 1.3 HCS/Kent engine (with carburettor) if that is any help.

Sound 2000 Blank Screen

27 December 2013 - 01:47 PM

Hi all,

I've been having some problems with the radio in my MK4 escort lately, I believe it's a sound 2000 model from 1990 or so. A previous owner decided to cut the original radio connectors off, I soldered them back on and it worked perfectly for about a week. But now I turn the radio on, it lights up but the screen is blank. It gets no radio signal either but it plays cassettes just fine. It doesn't even prompt for a code when it has been disconnected from the car which is something it did before.  The same thing also happens with a spare radio of the same model I have lying around which leads me to believe it is something to do with the car itself. I checked all of the connections to the radio and they all seem to be fine. Does anyone have any suggestions to what is wrong or how to fix it?

Escort Mk4 Spotlights

01 December 2013 - 08:13 PM

Hi all,

I've just purchased my first car, a 1990 Escort Eclipse. I have seen a number of other mk4 escorts with  spotlights on the front like the XR3s and RS turbos, and I would like to know if the brackets simply bolt on or if there needs to be any kind of cutting/drilling to get them to fit.

Thanks in advance
