Hey Mike, have you fitted the blanking plate yet? Are you still experiencing problems with starting? I had trouble on starting a couple of years back, then one day my car totally cut out on me when I reached an island. Had to get the missus to tow me back home. Turns out it was the cam sensor (the one that is located on the rocker cover) £30 fix, just unscrew the old and screw in the new, sorted. The next issue I had with starting was fixed by replacing my battery. I'm dreading the day when my turbo finally packs in, as thats the only majorly expensive part that hasn't been replaced on my car yet. I do love the mk1 focus though, mine's been an absolute trooper, it gets used daily and I hate to admit it but I do abuse it a bit, but mainly because I love driving it  :D

Hi Paul,


Was just wondering, did you slip the blanking plate in at the turbo side of the pipe or the EGR side? It probably won't make a difference and I'm just being too cautious, but I thought I'd ask a fellow MK1 Focus owner who's done this before. Cheers.  :P


Hi mate, I put it at the EGR end, mainly cos it's a lot simpler to get to. Whilst I had the pipe off that goes to the EGR valve though I gave it a really good clean. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw how clogged up this got. The pipe was roughly around an inch in diameter and the wall of soot deposited in that pipe reduced the diameter to about a quarter of an inch. best mod I've done on my car since I bought it back in 2010 (though I haven't really done much to it  :D.

I have a 2002 1.8 tdci (115bhp). I was really sceptical about blanking off the EGR valve, then I thought I'd just give it a go, I can always take it off again. 2 years on and I've never looked back, as soon as I fitted it I had a better throttle response from my car and now I'm seeing massive improvements in fuel economy. That said, mine is a 2002, I don't know what tweaks they'e made to the 1.8 tdci lump since mine was built, but I could see it having the same results. I'm just not sure if it will bring up any fault codes (which mine didn't), as you have a newer car than mine.

I've got the same problem. Where can I purchase the genuine Ford 'o' ring, I've tried ford but there claiming they don't stock it. They can only sell me a new heater matrix.

I've bought an assorted box of o rings from Halfords, lubed up a 17x2.5 O ring and inserted it into the female grove on the pipe but now I can't join the pipes back together. Either the o ring is the wrong thickness or I'm doing summit wrong. What size o ring do I need.


right, found the picture that I took just after I bought these (for any future reference, so I'm glad I took it now). Not exactly sure which number it is as there are three, I'm presuming its the 1342708, but heres the photo anyway. give me a shout if you'd like me to email you the picture.

Well its been a fair few months now since I replaced the rubber seals for genuine ford parts and I have to say its worked!!! the car no longer smells of coolant and there's no leaks and I didn't have to take the dash apart (though I did have to break the heater matrix housing). One word of advice before anybody else does this, buy some heat shielding material (Aluminised Heat Shield Glass Fibre Cloth) as once you break the housing and theres a hole, it's gonna kick out some heat in to the drivers footwell, especially on long journeys.

For what it's worth guys I have a 2002 1.8 tdci an I fitted a blanking plate. I've done 10k with it installed and have found subtle but noticeable improvements all round. Never had any error codes or issues.

Thanks stef123 I have called them now, they're gonna look at it this afternoon. You are right, this should have been sorted when the tracking was done in the first instance.

@ Lenny: when you remove the steering wheel, does the boss have toothed edges (around the outside) where the steering wheel connects to the car, in order for the wheel to be rotated and adjusted? I used to own a Mini city and it was a case of undoing a bolt and re-aligning it straight using the toothed edges of the shaft for the steering wheel. (I hope this makes sense :unsure: )

Hi all, I have a 2005 mk2 ford focus and yesterday I took it to the garage to have the wheel alignment adjusted, thanks to all the potholes in the road (I think the council should be paying for this myself, but that's another story). When driving the car home I noticed that the steering wheel was set to the left when driving in a straight line. When I straightened the steering wheel, the car moved to the right, very frustrating!!! I couldn't go back to the garage cos it was at the end of the day and I was the last customer. Now I won't be able to go back to the garage for another week as I'm at work.

Is there any way that I can straighten the steering wheel myself, without altering the tracking and wheel alignment that has already been done? By taking the steering wheel of and re-setting it to dead straight?

Any advice would be much appreciated :)
