Ford Escort RS Cosworth

In 1992 the performance baton was passed on to the next generation of RS, the Escort RS Cosworth.

The Sierra was no mean feat to follow but if any car was up to the challenge then it would be the Escort.

With 225bhp, it was more powerful than it's predecessor and thanks to the launch it got from the four wheel drive system, it could hit 60 in just over 6 seconds.

That was fast enough to trouble the BMW M3 which had the benefit of two extra cylinders and an extra litre of displacement in the engine.

And of course, as any 'Cossie' fan will know, it is not just the staggering performance that made this car iconic.

The back of this car featured what, in my opinion anyway, is one of the all time great pieces of car design, the Whale Tail.

But it was not just a piece styling, the Escort was all about aero and was able to boast the fact that it was the first ever production car to produce actual downforce on the front end.

Unfortunately it seems the better the car the less they make, with less than 7000 cars ever gracing this earth.
