We’ve all been there at some point: driving at night on a dark road and wishing you could see just that bit further ahead...
With the clocks going back this weekend, evenings are going to become even darker, so we’ve been looking at what you can do to brighten up your night driving.
There are several options when it comes to upgrading your headlights – the best and brightest solution being an upgrade to an HID (high intensity discharge) kit, but that can get both fiddly and expensive.
In fact, it’s really surprising how much better you can light up the road just by plugging in a new bulb.
Simply upgrading your bulbs can give a 90 to 120 per cent increase in brightness against standard factory fits, translating to roughly an extra 35 metres in visibility. Not only that, but you’ll have a greater light intensity over the 50-75 metre range which, according to experts, is deemed as the ‘critical’ area.
But how much does all this extra brightness, visibility and intensity cost? On average, it’s likely to set you back about £20-£25 to upgrade your factory set-up to a high-performance bulb, with prices ranging from around £10 per bulb, through to £40, depending on what brand you go for.
At the moment, the top dogs in high-brightness bulbs are Ring, Osram and Philips.
For example, a pair of Ring bulbs for a Mk7 Fiesta are usually priced at £29.99 – and are 120 per cent brighter than those fitted in the factory.
Sounds like a pretty good deal. And to brighten things up even more, we are now offering a five per cent discount on upgrades for all our members, through the bulb specialist, Auto Bulbs Direct.
