Overview

Although quite a few stones were thrown at this series in the past, third time has definitely been a charm for the franchise.  Dirt 3 truly takes rally racing to new heights with fantastic graphics, vehicles to die for, authentic features and gorgeous tracks graphics. In fact this third installment has managed to reposition the game series firmly in the realms of 21st century extreme sports.

The addictive iteration is played through the persona of Ken Block, an accomplished rally driver with a penchant for honing, which can best be describes as maniacal driving indulged in with the sole motive of entertainment.  The hero of Dirt 3 is the pioneer of a fantasy motor sport called Gymkhana where drivers show off their skills pulling doughnuts, jumping and drifting through extraordinary hurdles.

This is where Dirt 3 shows a marked shift from its ‘plain Jane' Rallying roots which did not bode well for the predecessors of the game.  In this latest Codemaster offering, players can get their very first taste of Gymkhana across a number of courses. In fact, the makers of the game had set up an actual Gymkhana Course on the grounds of the Battersea Power Station which garnered Dirt 3 and its designers a fair amount of attention.

Powered by the same underlying engine as Codemaster's F1 201, Dirt 3 comes with a fleet of vehicles that are surprisingly easy to drift. This means that when your tyres lose adhesion, the fun quotient goes up several notches. While Dirt 3 packs in a lot more than just the Gymkhana, the mode is a thoroughly enjoyable addition to the series. Where else could you possibly enjoy a delightfully bracing round of driving with thrilling stunts that would normally get you arrested?

With some of the finest machinery ever created at the disposal of the rally driver like the Audi Quattro, Mitsubishi Evos, Metro 6R4, Subera Imprezas and more, Dirt 3 provides unadulterated and absolute exhilaration. While the distinctive X games like flavor of the iteration may offend rally enthusiast, the context works wonderfully well in a video game. The best part is that an impressive performance can earn the gloating driver accolades online as the video can be uploaded straight to YouTube.

The dance music sound track adds to the heart thumping effect along with the fact that Dirt 3 is one of the best looking rally games available in the market today. Without a doubt, the level of driving required will take some hours spent practicing with the driving assists but once the player get the hang of the controls, Dirt 3 promises an out of the world gaming experience and delivers on it.
