Hi all, we have a 65 reg Vignale 210 powershift and getting intermittent spanner light. When comes on slight power loss, not limp mode and recovers fairly quickly. Light disappears when turned off then on. Might come on a few times then nothing for a while.

Been serviced as per Ford schedule and included gearbox service around 32k.Currently 65K

Been to Ford and say no faults recorded.

Anyone had similar problem or got a solution.

Nice car but if going to play up like this its going

The spanner indicates that it needs a service. It should have been done at 37500, 50000 and 62500. Major due at 75000.

It's possible Ford didn't reset the service indicator properly and it's based on mileage so maybe it's linked to the "62500 miles" service.

I have a Mondeo Vignale (2.0 Diesel 210PS) - and it is exhibiting the same "Spanner" Indicator light.  The Manual refers to this as "Powertrain Fault".  However, no MIL light is indicated, and no DTC codes are revealed when tested.

 

My symptoms are repeatable - at high speed, full wide open throttle, it reduces the performance.  It is not limp home mode, as speeds can be maintained, just it takes awhile to get there 🙂

Key Off and Key ON removes the Spanner - so assuming it is a temporary condition and not serious.  But it is affecting my decision to overtake safely.

 

Any pointers...?

what code reader did you use? the 2.0 tdci suffers from oil pressure soleniod issues, and triggers a fault on high revs/load conditions

Thanks for the reply - This one.  

As it seems related to vehicle speed (can't reproduce it at the same revs/lower gears), i more suspected Auto Transmission.  My next service is due 72K (and Transmission oil), so I guess changing air, oil, fuel filters may help to resolve.

I was hopeful someone might know a "service Reset" which may have been missed or something simple.

i would invest in an elm327 adapter amd download forscan for free. you will read alot more codes than with your reader. elm 327  is about £17

For completeness and possibly help others - the only Fault Code read by Ford Engineer was P06DD - "Engine oil Pressure Control Circuit Performance/Stuck Off".

With the best article I found to be here.

I got the fault cleared, and went for a run.  The fault returned, and I am waiting to double check the same fault code comes back to prove it.

I can then start to look at the possible causes in the article above, having already check the first one.

 

Possible causes
  • Engine oil level low.
  • Incorrect engine oil filter.
  • Insufficient oil pressure due to a mechanical failure in the oiling system.
  • Engine mechanical failure.
  • Engine oil pressure sensor.
  • Dual stage oil pump.

 

Thanks for assistance to date, if there are major differences when I get to the end of this, I will post back.

which is exactly the fault i described in my earlier post. you need a new oil pressure control soleniod fitting.

Hi Iantt - did yours cut out?

mine 2.0tdci has now 3 times on motorway ‘died’ leaving me to coast to hard shoulder. Lucky motorway was clear every time. 
 
I also get the spanner sign and see service manual 

total loss of power. Shut down and restarted car and then worked fine. 
 

very odd but obviously dangerous in wrong setting

Possibly something else to consider

Not sure of the exact number, five if I remember correctly, goes back quite some time, but reported on Talk Ford site - all Mk 5 diesel vehs. all low mileage Powershift Trans. 

Spanner light came on (sometimes on and off) and message Transmission Limited Function showed. Sometimes jerky trans operation. In all cases everybody/dealer dived to condemn the powershift trans

In all cases it transpired to be faulty EGR Valves

Yes, I am updating the info here.  You were spot on, a new oil Pressure Control solenoid was fitted and did resolve the issue.

So to update on my situation, I booked car in to Ford for diagnosis - waited the obligatory two weeks for an appointment and they came back with a diagnostic report stating that the fault was with the fuel sensor and air intake sensor, they qouted me around £400 to repair so i booked it in (antoher 2 week wait). Car goes in and later in day i get a call to say there was a mix up between parts and service dept and wrong parts were quoted / ordered so a) needs to be re booked in (another 2 weeks) and b) the price is now £1100!

eventually resolve all this with ford and car goes in again monday 13/7 - pick it up tuesday all completed.

wednesday on M25 same issue happens again, 60-70 mph as i push on accelerator the engine totally dies.

So it is back in today, i paid for a repair this week that has fixed nothing and nowhere nearer knowing what the problem is.

Personally I'd have gone to a Ford specialist, most of Ford's "technicians" can only work off a tick list and go by whatever the computer says to do.  Then there's their labour rate to consider, a good indi that's ideally a Ford specialist should have the tools AND knowledge to more accurately diagnose an issue, rather than just being "after completing the checklist the computer says replace the xxxxxx".

 

Put another way, most Ford dealers are dog :shit:

It sounds like the same issue as mine.  I kept the old Control Solenoid, and the coil of it tested ok (10ohms, as new one).  So either it is sticky and needs a clean, or breaks down under load or high temperature of the engine bay.

I’d recommend you change the part, see the video I linked.  It looks easy enough, my local mechanic did not charge me, when I asked him to change it when he was doing the oil and filter change.

Personally I'd much rather use an independent that specialises in Fords or at the very least a decent independent that has the right kit for diagnosing Ford's.  Ford dealers generally take the mick (why can we have a urination emoji) and just work off an electronic checklist, few of the "technicians" actually have the experience to truly diagnose a fault outside of "computer says no" (sadly).

 

It's a shame really, Ford generally make cars than are VERY good to drive but continually let themselves down when it comes to their dealers and customer service generally.

Hi guys!

About Ford mechanics everything said above is right.

I have a Smax Vignale 2.0 210bhp, purchased in July 2020 from Ford used vehicles, same issue I have, light yellow spanner key come on dashboard already 4 times, in August, September, October and now December. I booked it to Ford in service 2 times already, spend 2x full days, they said to me nothing come up wrong after diagnostic - lie.

First time they told me is the battery of remote key - liers;

Tonight again after spanner key in dashboard goes on again car jumped into limp mode, I took it straight away to a garage, after diagnostic come up a list of errors the most important P06DD, which is the oil pressure solenoid sensor, I will try tomorrow to explain this to Ford hope to replace under warranty (I have left of 1500miles or 6moths more).

ALL THIS Thanks tfrom reading in this forums.

Another different issue i have with the car is when driving calm in D mode pulling out slowly in traffic slightly uphill, engine is knocking like a detonation in combustion chamber only somethimes despite being Diesel. This is when I must react and release the ccelerator pedal or using the flaps to change into lower gear, is like timing to early. I really hope to be same Solenoid oil pressure sensor next to filter.

Anyone can help???

I have Ford Mondeo 1.4 diesel 2018 I have got spanner sign at my dashboard and it keep cutting of my power and switching off my car itself I had just change fuel filter but problem still the same any recommendations

So why has it got the "Spanner" light on ?

Have you used FORScan and read the Ford specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes ?
