Ok this is for a friend,as above what is the best food to help you Blood Count get that bit higher as he had a FBC and said just to eat more foods with Iron in.

Is this also known as B12 as i aint got a clue and to search it on Google gives you so many different things.

I said daily foods as some things are what people never eat anyway or rarely do.

Iron and vitamin B12 aren't the same thing.

Green veg tends to be iron rich.  As well as red meat and liver.  There's some in chicken and fish as well.

If they ear breakfast cereal, look for ones with high iron content.

Or just munch on an old Ford...

The things mentioned by Tom and prag are good. You can also get iron or vitamin B12 supplements however you can't have them as an only food source.

I know the person has bacon/pink salmon/cornflakes or/and bran flakes, the person is elderly so what mainly elderly people eat.

So which it the best to look for, very high in iron or B12 to increase the Red Blood Cells count (FBC) on say a daily base.

Looking more into the food side as the supplement and it just needs that bit more,i think there is iron tablets or drinks out there but am i looking at the right stuff.

Eggs are a good source of iron.

You get supplements with iron and you can also get iron tablets, usually on prescription. A word of warning about iron tablets though, they can and will bung you up.

Plenty of liver has all the iron you need.
Don't bother with supplementary vitamins etc, was told by a specialist sports doctor that supplements just give you expensive *****. [emoji16]

There's a difference between vitamin B12 deficiency and iron deficiency. If he was told he's deficienct in iron then you focus on foods high in that.

I wanted to tell him not to go the supplement way,it's just he had a full blood count FBC and the the nurse just said it's fine but it won't hurt just keeping it topped up as he don't eat a lot with iron in.
So Iron is the one to look at for FBC and like I said in a week he does like brocley/peas/bacon and his pink salmon so is all this ok as well as the eggs.

I also cant believe that 2 of  Weetabix with red Berries is 86% of the daily amount  (5.2mg each 2 biscuits).

so just 2 of these on a morning is as good as the 100% you need of iron each day as well as the normal food you have, loads more than 30g cornflakes.

  • 4 weeks later...

Nothing gets iron levels up better than a pint of Guinness!

...with the possible exception of 2 pints of Guinness....

Missus drinks spinach smoothies when the month rolls around.  Not as vile as it sounds - actually really tasty with a few other fruits thrown in...

Spinach smoothie well i like spinach myself but i would have to have a lot of fruit in that, has a nice bit of green veg like this at the moment the person does now.

And Guinness on the other hand,2 nice pints of that and see an elderly person who needs a frame jump up and have no frame lol.

For me its a big yes.

A spoonful of honey counteracts the spinach flavour nicely - other fruits are just for preference really =]
