Boot Leaking, Can't find the source

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have been having this issue on my MK7 Zetec S for several months now, I thought I'd fixed it but it has come back.

Basically after heavy rain, or car washing, there is a puddle in the spare wheel well. The boot carpet will be soaked through, and the drivers side mat will be damp. The first thing I tried was running water over the roof and i noticed it was dripping around where the thumbscrew for removing the rear light unit. So I thought it was the seal around the light. I resealed the light around the internal seal first, and as that did not cure it, I sealed around the outer edge of the light at the top aswell as some body joints, (I have attached pictures to show this. However the boot is still leaking, there will be a wet spot right in the corner under the light unit, (have highlighted on picture. I have stripped out the trim around the boot on the drivers side and performed the water test again, but nothing would come in, however this morning, there was water in there again. I am a bit at a loss of how to fix this now. I know it must be drivers side as the passenger side has remained bone dry the whole time.

Thanks in Advance for any help/suggestions

I have a Focus so not sure how the cluster is secured from the outside but with mine the rain water was coming through the screw fixing hole. From one of your photos I’m guessing the screw hasn’t been siliconed, just a suggestion buddy.

Hi mate, what do you mean by cluster?

Apart from the two external bolts that hold the light fixing, that is all the outer screws that are there I believe.

Sorry, yes the light cluster.Have you sealed the external screws, as mentioned?Worked for me on my Focus. Also is there an air vent in the corner like the Focus near those rubber grommets?

I have the exact same problem on my '09 Fiesta.  ***** annoying, loads of water got in and dripped into my reversing sensor control box and b*ggered it.

Be good to get to the bottom of this issue.

Ive not sealed the screws themselves nope, Not as far as Im aware regarding the vent,  I think there might be  one in behind the metal, but I think that its lower then the where the water is coming in and hitting the boot.

My Last car was a focus, I know that is not a fiesta and may be different. When it was about 18 months old, a lot of the rear electrics stopped working and there was damp in the wheel well.

Route cause was the rubber grommet that sealed the wiring from the rear light unit where it went into the wing was split and wouldn't seat correctly causing water to run down the loom wetting everything and rotting a plug block.

Like I say it may be useful, maybe not.

I have the same problem with my '09 ZS. Always on the right hand side of the boot.

Where are the most common places it leaks?

Hi all, sorry for reviving a dead thread.

I finally think I found the source of the leak and thought I’d share it to help others out.

It involved removing the bumper panel (not too hard a job if you have a Haynes manual and the correct tools.) And I discovered there were two holes in the chassis that were obviously there from manufacturing, and the cover the holes the guys in the factory had just covered them in sort of adhesive cloth material/ gaffa tape, and over time the tape had slowly peeled away exposing the holes for the water to get in. I’ve dovered the holes with silicone and a piece of tin over the top which I’ve again sealed over with and hopefully this will finally fix the problem. I checked the other side where the water wasn’t going in and saw the tape has only just started peeling, so I replaced that too. Hope this helps!

What a bodge job by the factory that is.. Does seem odd to me that the leaking spot is below the place where it is wet. However, water does get everywhere. Have you got rid of the sealant on your light? Can't really change any bulbs when the ***** thing is 'glued' to the car haha:wink3:

the photo doesn’t really show it that well, but the holes are above where the leak is. Haha the sealant on the light was fine, it lifted off completely normally when I needed to get the bumper off

Ahh right. Haha then it's all good.
