Dan P Posted April 22, 2018 Share Posted April 22, 2018 Mrs P was looking to upgrade from her Focus Mk2 2.0 Zetec Climate and was seriously considering getting something nearly new and sensible with good fuel consumption until we found this Mk2 ST. As far as I can tell it's entirely standard. She has had 2 owners from new with 72,500 miles on the clock - the last owner had the car for four years and only covered around 3,000 miles a year. She appears to be in pretty good shape and runs incredibly smoothly. There are a couple of little jobs that need doing and unfortunately it hasn't got a heated front windscreen which I thought was standard. We'll probably be looking at keeping this fairly standard in the short term and then may take a view once we've decided whether we can live with the increased fuel costs! 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Dan P Posted May 17, 2018 Author Share Posted May 17, 2018 Whilst Mrs P was driving back from Bristol to London having just purchased the car she was using her phone as a SatNav and got half the way home before her phone died, despite being plugged in to the cigarette lighter. After changing the fuse to no avail I set about removing the ashtray and 12V socket to find that it was burned out. Thankfully I still had a 12V extension cable acquired from @Stoney871 so I installed this behind the kick panel in the driver's footwell, threaded the phone charger into the ashtray and have ordered a replacement lighter socket. 1 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Dan P Posted May 17, 2018 Author Share Posted May 17, 2018 The next job was to transfer the Isofix bracket from Eve to Fanta. This requires the seat back to be removed - firstly fold it down and where it pivots by the door move the catch forward and lift it out. It'll then pull out of the other seat section. There are a couple of bungs in the body where the bolts (Torx T50) go. Dan P Posted May 17, 2018 Author Share Posted May 17, 2018 As a precaution I plugged in my bluetooth ELM327 reader and using Torque app I checked for fault codes and found P0193. Based on my online research the most common cause for this is a faulty fuel rail sensor so I ordered a replacement. I left the car unused for 24 hours and then set about replacing the component. On the right hand side of the engine there's a Schrader valve to release the pressure from the fuel rail. You can attach a hose from a bike pump on it but I just placed a rag underneath it and depressed the valve with a small screwdriver - hardly any fuel came out. In hindsight, it may have been easier to remove the sensor if I'd left a bike pump hose attached to it until I'd finished so that I wasn't trying to pull it out against a weak vacuum. The sensor itself is on the left hand side tucked behind the symposer and the engine cover. This was a much more difficult job than it should have been purely because of how difficult access is and how little space there is to work (having hands that rapidly get sore thanks to rheumatoid arthritis doesn't help either but being stubborn nearly always results in victory!) After removing the symposer pipe and lifting up the engine cover you need either a mini ratchet or right angled Torx (T25) key in order to undo the screw. I was very careful to ensure that I didn't drop the screw! I placed a rag underneath the sensor and then tried to remove it. It was quite hard to get enough force to pull the sensor out but eventually it came free and a bit more petrol dribbled out. The new sensor was wriggled in and tightened up. I then turned on the ignition, waited for the fuel pressure to build and went to start the engine... nothing! Tried again and to my relief the engine ran fine so I cleared the fault code. I'll let the car run for a few weeks and then check that the error code hasn't come back. 3 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Dan P Posted May 25, 2018 Author Share Posted May 25, 2018 On Wednesday I set about trying to replace the boost solenoid but ultimately had to abandon it as I just couldn't access it properly - I'm not too proud to admit that some jobs are beyond me! After putting the front end on axle stands, removing the driver's side front wheel and taking the engine undertray off I set about trying to find it. Eventually I found it tucked away here: Given how inaccessible it turned out to be, I had to abandon the job. If I could get the car over a pit then maybe I'd have a better chance. As it is, the boost is behaving itself at the moment so I don't mind leaving it for now. Dan P Posted July 30, 2018 Author Share Posted July 30, 2018 In addition to the outstanding boost solenoid issue, Fanta has developed a further problem. A strange noise after she gets warmed up which sounds just like this... This appears to be a blown diaphragm on the oil filter housing, another known vulnerability on the Mk 2 ST so the car is out of action for the time being. I had a not so difficult decision to make - order from Ford at £240 or from a Volvo parts supplier for £170. Once the part has arrived I'll find someone to fit it along with the solenoid and also get the tracking looked at at the same time as there's a bit of a judder at motorway speeds. I've been quoted some fairly silly numbers for getting a replacement (around £700) but one of the guys at our local garage used to have an ST and may have his old exhaust at the back of his garage which would help on the cost! If he can't find it then I'll scour eBay or maybe get a Mongoose exhaust from Collins as they've got a sale on at the moment. Annoyingly we've just renewed our insurance with Hastings and they'll want £85 if I change the exhaust. Will cross my fingers that the guy you know can find his for you most likely better off going for aftermarket at the price you have been told for a standard replacement.
