Focus Mk3 pre facelift sync to sync 2 8” touchscreen!

Right, despite the previous given advice I’ve decided to this conversion, I nearly have all the bits and will be tackling it over the bank holiday weekend. I’m confident I can get all functions working and it’ll provide the perfect step to later convert to sync 3 once the price of used units comes down a bit.

What im looking for is any interest in a how to guide? I had little luck when searching for a guide and have sourced my information from all over the place. I’m happy to describe the process and take loads of pictures provided people would want to see it!

Ive attached a picture of what I’m starting with and the existing system will be up for sale once the conversion is complete.

So let me know 👍🏻

This is something I had briefly looked into so I would be interested in a guide also. Hope you can get it all working.

Thanks for the interest guys! I’m hoping it gains momentum as I go along, surely I can’t be the only one that can’t stand the tiny screen and a million buttons on the stereo 😂 plan is to post bits as I go then once done I’ll make a full idiots guide to do it 👍🏻

So far I’ve had a little test fit and try of the unit and fascia, added the gpsm module and made the reverse camera adaptor.

Fascia is gonna need a little trim around the bottom but nothing too major and the trim cover will finish it off nicely. Unit needed 2 can wires moving before it would power up but once up and running it was mostly there, climate display works straight off which was nice 👍🏻70BE4A4D-221D-4546-94A6-9CB1F7D92139.thumb.jpeg.c49476cdc44970ee5dc015a5d9e8f510.jpeg166E8FA8-2C61-4BA4-A000-CA2E1F995D6D.thumb.jpeg.04c8e22f4945f4010cd7b2e5634c9af9.jpeg47097E5D-2AE4-474F-87D1-9828341398FE.thumb.jpeg.64bccb06874db04130407fa17cd19a71.jpegF40D2892-077F-4D71-8347-DF81949F3F5E.thumb.jpeg.94c2989f9ebcf68d3e842f2620fd33e3.jpeg765BC80C-C418-40FB-B14B-B748FB5A5930.thumb.jpeg.779cc95dcbe9c123d4796c0eae8ade34.jpeg35E822D8-6018-433F-8922-38B31560C0EE.thumb.jpeg.a79ea3668fe80315c2796ab1d26060c7.jpeg66EA9C0E-11D4-4685-B744-F14F7A4DC5D0.thumb.jpeg.2843c8781530c9fe1e5308c36939b4e6.jpegBA981CC8-A480-4FE1-8BD3-2A25B0F84C5A.thumb.jpeg.989ad7884c22fd98ce8330c4809b276e.jpeg2728D694-AE05-4F61-B615-FEB3C381A631.thumb.jpeg.22e293ef3d2363d7a9b0ad5838a4c8b1.jpegCAD2C212-2CA5-40F1-8CB1-6816FBA898EC.thumb.jpeg.f63f50028b045b9350b7fd6f8a3a9890.jpeg88BDECD0-253D-45B3-98B7-EB9A838D755D.thumb.jpeg.705e13c380b35b58f16524120ae61b2b.jpeg85A45438-FC4F-4335-82A9-86B8A2BD588D.thumb.jpeg.17b151bdf5f2fa342bf0fc7a3ecc3214.jpeg

Definitely interested in some kind of guide / how to! Where did you get the parts from? eBay?

Yeah the actual unit and the fascia came from eBay with the media hub and loom, the rest has been from all over including ford, I’ve found the perfect solution for mounting the media hub as well. I’m really looking forward to doing it, only a week to go!

Ever since I’ve had this Car I’ve always been bugged by the stereo, Way to small a screen and far to many buttons, so this has always been a idea but finally bit the bullet and bought the bits. I thinks people will find it surprising as to how straight forward and cheap it can be. I wish I’d had the funds for sync 3 but people still ask silly money for them 😂

I would absolutely love to have a guide for this! I've got myself a lovely Focus now, my only gripe is that horrid Sync 1.1 system that it's come with!! Please continue with this because I for one would love this!

Apim pins and molex crimpers arrived today, so far so good! Also got the media hub mount sorted with the help of a mk5 Mondeo 😂

This is excellent work, mate and I'd be well up for getting this done!

Quick question - I'm assuming the gpsm module you referred to is the box you installed inside the mirror cover?  Is this for the sat nav as I already have nav on my 1.1 but I noticed I have this module missing...?

Thanks mate, I’m really excited about it!

The gpsm module is indeed for the navi. I thought that as I already had navi then I must already have it but the system varies a bit between the 2 systems. In the sync 1 the navi is done by the standard blue fakra antenna that goes to the roof aerial but on sync 2 it uses the gpsm module that gives the location via ms-can. It always worth checking though as if you have emergency assistance and no Nav then you likely already have a gpsm module. It was about £20 on eBay for a used one however nearly everyone lists them as a rain sensor so need to search for the part number as opposed to the function. Didn’t require any programming and is recognised by the bcm once plugged in ( check the plug is there, I was lucky and mine was ) but it’s worth noting that after adding it initially didn’t see it in forscan as I loaded the vehicle profile from the last plug in, it will only be seen if you scan as a new vehicle.

Yeah I have the plug. I asked about it on my build thread but nobody answered. Yeah I have sync 1.1 with nav and emergency assistance.

I absolutely would prefer sync 2 for functionality but I might miss the glossy piano black section of dash below the screen. It is starting to get swirl marks though...

What do you reckon total cost to you has been?

I don’t think I’ll miss it, it’s a bugger for finger prints and the screen to button ratio is well out 😂

I found out that on the sync 1.1 the emergency assistance is actually reliant on your phone which is why you won’t have the module, fortunately it’s easily added though 👍🏻

I need to add it all up but the cost is in the region of £300, there is a chap on eBay that sells the fascia, apim, screen, acm media hub and loom for around £215. The other little odds and sods are small cost really. Most expensive was the pins for the apim, could only get them from the states. 40 were about £18 but that included import tax and shipping.

I cant wait to see the guide, I'm dying to get this setup sorted in my car!  Really hopeful for this! :D Keep up the good work! :D:D:D

Also, if possible, you mentioned about the eBay seller that sells the majority of the stuff needed, could you post the listing/user?

I’m dying to get started, only a couple more days 😂

I didn’t buy off the chap in the end as I made an offer on another one but his username is focuscarbreakers2010, he has about 7 unit on eBay at the moment for £215 delivered.

Thanks for the info! I'll have a gander and see whats available.  Hopefully when the guide comes out I can see what bits I need to buy separately vs what the guy provides.

It’s not too much extra really and to be honest I’m probably being a little too thorough, he provides the fascia, acm, apim, fcdim, loom and media hub

Better to be thorough and get all functionality working rather than half a**ing the job and wasting more money down the line. :D

There is that I guess 😂 the only thing I know isn’t gonna be happening yet is the interior door lock button, they moved it to the door on the facelift, I’ve never used it and it doesn’t really worry me, if I have a need for it one day I’ll just get a facelift doorcard and wire in the button 😂

Luckily for me I was able to get the facelift Focus, I prefer the position of the old button vs the new one as I always forget its there!
