What is Focus MK2 key transponder chip type

Recommended Posts

I have an issue with adding new keys for Focus MK2 year 2007.

I bought 3-button flat blade fob with transponder chip on Ebay. Seller wrote chip type is " 4D60". Chip looks ceramic, not glass (like on the attached image from another seller).

Seller wrote it's for: Focus 2005-2010, Mondeo 2007-2010 ,Fiesta 2009-2010,Galaxy 2006-2010,C Max 2003 2010, S Max 2006-2010. And I see other sellers write this too.

When I checked them with Forscan, I got error B1600 meaning chip is not detected at all. They advise me to know what chip type is my working key. Can I read it with Forscan or how can I check it?

I searched topics here, but found none where chip type is specified. I found http://www.transpondery.com/transponder_catalog/ford_transponder_catalog.html which says 4D-60 id for Focus Mk1 and 4D63 should be for Focus Mk2.

Can it really be that seller sent this (ceramic) 4D60 while I need 4D63?

Note: I guess this is not "blank transponder" vs. "coded transponder" issue because in that case coding is possible but unsuccessful.

Coding chips with Forscan can be a bit hit & miss at times tbh.
I suggest buying a glass chip and seeing if that works ok.
Bed it into the fob with a dab of hot glue or suchlike ensuring that thw coil end faces towards the blade.
I have seen mk2 keys with ceramic chips though.

There seems to be a lot of uncertainty about what year range the keys being sold will fit. But the consensus I have seen is also that 4D63 is for the Mk2/2a Focus (2005-2010). And 4D60 is for Mk1 Focus.

However, the 4D63 has two variants, 40 bit and 80 bit. I have found one seller that claims the 80 bit 4D63 is for the Mk2/2A Focus.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OEM-TEXAS-4D63-80-Bit-TRANSPONDER-CHIP-for-FORD-MAZDA-KEYS/391913866205?hash=item5b3fe303dd:g:9fMAAOSwTQtZ8kBa

If the seller said the chip was 4D60, then it probably is, and the system will not recognise it at all, as you have found.

I think the appearance of the chip may not be a reliable guide.

I hope the link I added is reliable: http://www.transpondery.com/transponder_catalog/ford_transponder_catalog.html  Other source is ILCO key reference: http://www.ilco.us/media/770042/v18/File/2018-auto-truck-key-blank-reference.pdf

According to those docs, 4D60 for Focus MK1, 4D63 for MK2, 80 bit for Focus should be from 2011.

What confuses me is a number of sellers on Ebay/Alibaba who offer wrong chips, like this 4D60 for Focus MK2. I don't know what buyers do, complain in vain like myself or nothing.
