Windscreen Washer Not Working

Hi

I have just bought a W Reg Ford focus 1.6 LX zetec.

I noticed that the washer was not working so topped up the res. Nothing is coming through front or back but the pump is making a noise.

The res filled up pretty quickly so i'm assuming there was already water in there. Any ideas or advice.

Thanks

sounds dumb but open the bonnet and the washer hose remove that at the washer jet and suck till you get the water through now replace and try it again it could be frozen water in the bottom of the bottle or hose or the hose is slightly blocked also could be the washer jets easy way to tell if after what i said it still doesnt work then get someone to activate the washer while you hold the open hose away from you if water comes out of the hiose then its the washers that are blocked a needkle down the hole usualy sorts this out

if the motors making a noise you must have a blockage did you blow into the pipe to see if the air was going into the bottle give that a try it may dislodge whatever it is

  • 3 weeks later...

I have a 1995 Escort. The symptoms were that the washer pump motor worked ok, but only a tiny amount of water came out of the jets when the washer motor first started, and then nothing.

I took the car to the garage and they seemed to fix the problem, but then two weeks later the same problem returned.

I used a siphon pump to suck the water from the reservoir, and found that there were lots of chunks of algae in the water.

The washer pump could be accessed from under the front of the car - the picture below shows the pump attached to the washer fluid reservoir.

After emptying the reservoir with the siphon pump, I removed the pump by gently pulling it away from the reservoir. This left the rubber filter bung in the reservoir, which I then removed. Sure enough this was totally clogged with algae. After cleaning the filter, and flushing through the reservoir, I replaced the filter and pump, refilled the reservoir and the problem was solved.

Thanks for the info, got exactly the same problem, but how did you get the pump out of the reservoir, which direction? down towards the ground or more towards the wheel. and i guess you also jacked up the car aswell to make it easier.

managed to remove pump, however i managed to push the filter into the reservoir. damn it.

Nice one Rick01, was going to post the same as I've just had the blocked filter disease! Jumped the gun a bit by ordering an aftermarket pump and 18mm seal from fleabay so I swapped in the new seal and pump after flushing out the tank, aftermarket seal is just a grommet and has no filter to get blocked so the jets would be the next port of call for gunge, but at least they're a bit more accessible than the pump!

In case anyone wants the model numbers for a genuine ford washer pump mine is a W Reg Escort 55 Van and it's a 93BB 17K624AA D00LA 0BA, the aftermarket one was about £5 and the seal £1.50 as opposed to dealer parts prices, make sure to get the one with the correct electrical connector, later cars have the angled electrical connection with a wire clip as opposed to exposed spade terminals pointing straight upwards. It also needs to me an 18mm inlet and single small bore outlet. Hope this helps someone.
