Noisy tyres, handling, wear etc?

Featured Replies

Hi all

When we were test driving various Fiestas trying to decide which to buy, I noticed compared to other vehicles I drive, that there was a *lot* of road noise.

In the end I avoided the low profile'd, alloy wheel'd Titanium and bought an Econetic which was much quieter on the road and I'm very pleased with it,  although the handling with those little tyres and rims was nervous, particularly in the wet.

In the end we changed the wheels and tyres for a set that I had left over from our written off Peugeot 207.   Too big really for the car but they seem OK and it handles superbly.

Anyway, to the main point of this post....  The two rear tyres are nearly worn out and so its time to buy some new boots.   ATM on it are Pirelli's which have worn really well but there is still a lot of tyre noise - particularly on some types of tarmac and quite a lot of howl when cornering (they did this on the same road with the Peugeot so definitely the actual tyres).

Does anyone know which tyre make/model might be a good choice for something on the Fiesta that is known to be quiet or quieter?

Regards

Jon

all tyres have a sound rating. id go for one with the lowest rating that meets your needs

Hi Jon,

Couple of thoughts (have an econetic also)...

Currently have Hankook Kinergy K425s on mine and they're pretty good for road noise. They're mostly worn and am thinking of putting on Continental Premium Contact 5s next as they're rated well in tyre tests.

Remember that the noise ratings on tyre labels are for drive-by noise  - external noise, not cabin noise.

There are independent tyre tests online at adac.de and tyrereviews.co.uk btw. Helpfully the ADAC have tested 175/65 14s that fit the econetic 😊

Tyre companies still carry out their own tests, however, mainly the stronger the sidewalls together with poor tread design pattens cause more noise than soft sidewalls.

Bridgestone and Pirelli both have strong walls with a hard compound which on some cars can generate noise.

For soft walls but less sport orientated look towards Mich. or Conti.

Good all-rounders been Goodyear Dunlop & Kumho or Avon Cooper if on a budget..
