2006 Ford Focus Sport Automatic

Have developed an intermittent idle problem when stationary in traffic .  The idle speed suddenly will fade, as though it will cut out, but doesn't, yet it feels as though the car is jerking forward . I put my foot on the brake and gently increase the revs too ......yes, naughty, as automatic, so need to use two feet .No warning lights come on .   Taken it to Halfords , and nothing is showing up as a fault . They're flummoxed , and assuming it's a fuel problem ?    Has anyone any ideas, please ?  It's a petrol engine.
