2013 Mk7. 5 Ford Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost engine problems

Hi,

I've got a 2013 fiesta with the 1.0 ecoboost 125bhp engine. Up until last week I've had almost 2 years of relatively trouble free motoring with only just over 19000 miles on the clock.

On the way home from work I had a sudden loss of power and felt almost sluggish. Not quite limp home mode but just didn't have anything there under my foot. The button to manually switch stop/start off illuminated on its own and wouldn't turn off. Thought it to be a bit odd at the time but managed to get it home and safely back on the driveway. Now the engine warning light has flickered and stayed on.

I got hold of a basic Obd2 reader to see what was going on and it indicated a fault code of P0301 Cylinder 1 misfire detected. I promptly swapped out the spark plugs for new and it swiftly fired up, not spluttering and vibrating like it was before. I drove it approximately a mile up the road to get the engine up to temp and noticed the exact same symptoms creeping back in. I took the spark plug back out from cylinder 1 and it was wet with oil! 2 and 3 were bone dry as expected.

I've thrown in the towel in terms of trying to fix this myself. The car is booked into an independent Ford specialist but he can't see it till the 30th May. Just wanted to get a feel if anybody has ever had the same or similar issues and their outcomes. Obviously the car is out of warranty. Serviced at around 10000 miles by Evans halshaw and around 14500 by myself using Ford spec parts and premium synthetic 5w20 oil. I'm fully aware of the coolant 'degas' hose issues that seem to plague these engines too. Thankfully my coolant reservoir is still full and the engine starts on the button just not on all cylinders. 

I'm mentally preparing myself for a new engine all be it a second-hand one. Hopefully it won't come to that, fingers crossed!

Sounds like head gasket’s gone or a cracked piston.  Can you run a compression test on that cylinder?

I was thinking along the lines of loss of compression, would certainly explain the loss of power. Just can't get my head around how an engine with 19000 miles on is having major issues like this. I've had it since 10k. Haven't got a gauge to test the compression but I'd bet my money on it being significantly lower than 2 and 3. Lost all faith in the car to be honest if it does turn out to be major

Hi craig7787. I'm having exactly same problem as yours. Did you find out what was causing the problem? Worn out piston ring, vacuum leak, o2 sensor or ecu itself?

Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost mk7.5 100ps 2013 30,000 miles. 

- Starts ok, when idle rev settled to 900rpm the Engine Management Light starts blinking, extracted P0301 code, spark plug was fouled / Increase noise and vibration, much more severe if the climate control was turned on / Loss of power in every gear, the turbo can be heard spooling heavily / Start-stop button continuously lit up, Audio controls on the steering not working also. / No residue on the oil cap nor the coolant reservoir lid, both oil & coolant are within the recomended level . No signs of leak from the Engine block. 

- 3x Spark plug & coil packs changed / Cleaned the Throttle body, Turbo, MAF sensors and all the air intake pipes / All vacuum lines and wiring was checked and secured again. / pcm code was reset and took the car for test drive.

- Started and drove normal for about 7mins, then at the stop, idling, the Engine Management Light started blinking but disappear the moment the car moves or the revs increase, No code was recorded / There was power loss also like the car was going on limp mode.

Hi,

No its still sat on my drive and I'm none the wiser. I've got it booked into a ford specialist on Wednesday 30th so hoping he can figure it out.

In terms of self help I've changed the spark plugs, swapped coil 1 to 2 and vice versa hoping the misfire would detect on cylinder 2 instead. No joy there! I've just today got myself a compression gauge but haven't had chance to test yet. Presuming it will be lower in cylinder 1. 

Same as you in terms of residue on the caps, there isn't any! No obvious leaks, only reference I can find on the Internet is the coolant degas hose issues, not the case for our engines it would seem!

Have you had yours in the garage, if so any joy? Like I said I've come to terms it could be a big bill coming my way, just wish I didn't owe best part of 7k left on the finance otherwise I'd be getting rid.

Will keep you updated now there's someone with the same issue I know.

I'd put my money on piston rings, but you'll know in about 2-3 days. Like @ThaiFiesta said, these 1.0's seem to be all good or they have terrible faults...

Thinking the exact same thing, seems the most logical reason as to why oil is getting in there...

So an update to my 13 plate fiesta.., My local ford specialist confirmed today that I had loss of compression in cylinder one due to piston ring failure. Only way forward for me is a second hand engine and then part ex. He stated in his professional opinion this is not coolant related, therefore it is doubtful I would get anywhere with the cowboys at Ford footing the bill. Thankfully I have sourced a second hand engine with warranty for £960 just need to get it fitted now, hopefully no more than 2 grand all in.

From reading everyone else's story's regarding Ford on various other forums and Facebook groups. Ford's contribution even if they chipped in, I would bet my yearly salary that it would be more expensive than what I have planned. My main priority now is to get the car running again with no EML lights, pass its mot then its getting part exd.

I've been wanting to jump on the EV band wagon for a while now and this engine failure has forced my hand. Never ever again would I touch a Ford.

I just wish I knew the history behind these engines before I wondered into Evans Halshaw back in Aug 2016. I recall from the test drive, any issues with the new 1.0 engines. "No No there bulletproof mate". Lewis from Evans Halshaw at Lincoln if your still working there you are one lying *****!

I have found a specialist garage in Hull , who does "rebuilt Ford's ecoboost engine" £1000 inclusive VAT, 2 weeks turnaround. I did research on the garage, and they are legit, with social media account showing off their work. They are currently repairing ecoboost from dealership. So I'm gonna have mine Rebuilt then run it to the ground, but this time I will put a freaking oil catch can and 5w30  on it.

Is that the place that was advertised on eBay? I've bought a 2015 engine with 10k on it. Should arrive next week then it will get fitted. I'm like you going to lose money on it but I don't trust the car what so ever anymore. I don't want to be worrying everytime I drive it. Are you in the ecoboost failure Facebook group?
