Lenny
Hi all, The Story: Two weeks ago myself and the wife went to see a special sort of carpenter whom makes tables out of tree trunks with the bark still on the edges and various pieces of similar natural design. We went there to get an Oak floating mantle and floating shelf for the hall to be used as a minimalist hall table inside the front door, I paid €750 for both of them (with €50 discount) they require full payment before any work takes place as there built to specific size and design. The guy carves them from a tree and treats the wood himself sort of an art which added to the appeal of going there as the pieces are going to unique and be part of our home forever more, they took time to grow and time to create by hand which is just what we want for the place we like to relax in; surrounded by some things that took a lot of effort to purchase or create helps to relax seeing things that have been done. Here's some of his work The uncertainty Today were going to drive up 1hr 20min to collect the two pieces, They have a nice show room in the place with mantles in various wood and finishes, I saw these cast iron Acorn's and thought it would be nice to give two of them as a Gift when collecting the oak as Acorns grow on Oak and they tie in with what the guys do. They weren't expensive only €1.50 each for cast iron there fairly heavy and selling for £11.99 each on eBay https://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/Cast-Iron-Decorative-Acorn-Spare-Key-Secret-Storage-Hider-for-Patio-or-Garden/332694975561?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D20180306143914%26meid%3Da7b6fca53f8f4459aec180ca22523eb4%26pid%3D100935%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D1%26sd%3D202302037220%26itm%3D332694975561&_trksid=p2056116.c100935.m2460 Ive bought four, i plan on keeping two myself and i was going to give two to them: in my opinion to show appreciation for there skill other than paying for the guys time and materials, They might look good on an Oak mantle in the showroom or something. The uncertainty The wife and my mother and they both sort of give a dead silence after I told them my intentions followed by an "Ow Kay" Honest opinion guys: should I give them as a Gift or would it just be a weird thing to do? As I'm doubting myself now 😅 I'll be leaving today at 10:20 so answers before then if possible please and thanks
TomsFocus
Seems a bit weird to me... But I'm probably not the best judge of social etiquette...

Thanks Pete, We're here now at the workshop but there's nobody here the place is locked, I've phoned and he's off collecting some timber but he's going to be back within the next half an hour. zain611
Bit late from me but I'd say it would be nice of you. He'd look at it as a nice thing from you. I'm sure all us here would feel all gooy inside when someone goes the extra mile to give something. Not bad work also from him. Also forgot I'm redoing my room so hopefully will show you the progress and results 👍

Really not a fan of bdays and Xmas let alone having to deal with any extra gifts during the year. I guess we're all different though...the issue would be if Lenny is a 'gooey' person and the recipient isn't.
zain611
@TomsFocus like they say the thought that counts!. With me no one needs to get me anything as most of the time I'm given something I won't be bothered wearing / using 😂 but have that respect that they thought of getting something. I think the last time I got something for someone was for the girl I liked back in college. I remember getting her a star keyring which looked expensive as it was in a fancy box. I just made out I know her birthday month but not the date as it might look a bit odd or weird to her. Never got anything from her but I'd taught myself not to expect anything from her. Sometimes I question if I'd find someone as a lot of decent girls just don't want to have an open relationship. I find birthdays and Christmas a good occasion to get the family together. My birthday is a day after bonfire night so that gives the excuse to get fireworks. Last Saturday I went out to see my family as it was my grandads brothers first death anniversary. Luckily the mood there wasn't distraught so just was laughing and joking.

He seemed surprised and his colleague was looking at me like "you wierdo" He then laughed and said to his colleague "wow present on a Monday morning" then when he saw them he seemed fairly happy Then when we were leaving he handed me a bag with a chopping board in it says there's something in exchange and I appreciate the business. Overall it was nice to get the chopping board and all but I should have listened to the no voters and not bothered ☺ as it was sort of embarrassing when they asked what it was before even opening the package; although there work is superior; I'm not likely to have any further business with them moving forward as I have no further use for the line of work which they provide. The mantles are fantastic and I'll have them fitted in three weeks time when my father is available to come down and assist in fitting; I'll update the living room project thread in due time. Thanks guys
