Temperature gauge issue?

Long story, but here goes the short version. .....

2005 Ford Ghia 115bhp with 81k on the clock.

Recent coolant leak in the car was diagnosed by the RAC man as a heater matrix failure. A good independent garage replaced it but had temperature issues after fitting, so replaced the thermostat too.

Despite a heat from the foot well issue,  which they are going to have a look at soon, I drove the car 13 miles down the motorway today. It was ok on the way down, with the temperature gauge just below half.

On the way back I noticed the gauge needle fall. ...All the way to just under a quarter. Once at my destination, I let the car run a few minutes and it started to rise again.

Anyone got an ideas why this may happen? Normally it can be a stuck or faulty term thermostat,  but this one is a week old!

I've got the same car and Ford quoted me £252 for the 'fancy' electronic thermostat on this engine? Are you sure the garage changed it?

You've got an '05 1.6VCT engine? I'm guessing for £42 it came from eBay, so maybe it's a dud. I understand that Ford's own dealer level diagnostic system can interrogate the electronic thermostat but I'm not sure if independents (even Snap, solus etc) have that ability?

Yes....

Looking at the invoice, the part came from eurocarparts, and cost £77 for the thermostat and housing. They charged me less to keep the price close to the quoted price for the work done.

Don't get that from garages too often.....but my parents have used them for years.
