Cannot get Mk 5 rear calipers into maintenance mode

Hi all,

 

Undoubtedly something I'm doing wrong, but following "tool free maintenance mode" videos, I'm never succeeding.

As per video, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmKdfQ17cd0) I am: -

1. Ignition On
2. Fully depress accelerator and hold down brake release button
3. While still holding turn ignition off then on again (within 5 seconds)
4. Feck all happens :(
 

What am I doing wrong here?

If you were a bit closer I’d have done it with the diagnostic for you.

In all honesty I had never heard of a maintenance mode before. I'm an old school mec so just wound pistons in as normal.

Not saying what I did was correct practice but I can say I'm now 6mths on from my disc and pads replacement on my 15 plate Mondy with no adverse affects apparent..

Activation

WARNING: service actions on vehicles equipped with electronic parking brakes may cause unexpected parking brake application, which could result in injury to hands or fingers. Put the electronic parking brake system into service mode prior to servicing or removing rear brake components. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

NOTE: EPB (electronic parking brake) service mode is also known as EPB maintenance mode. NOTE: Carry out the following service mode deactivation procedure to activate the EPB system.

  1. Set the ignition to ON.

  2. Press and hold the brake pedal.

  3. Press the EPB switch to release the parking brake.

  4. Release the brake pedal and the EPB switch.

  5. Press and hold the accelerator pedal and place the EPB switch to the RELEASE (downward) position. Continue to hold the accelerator pedal and EPB.

  6. Set the ignition to OFF then set the ignition to ON within 5 seconds. Continue to hold the accelerator pedal and the EPB switch.

  7. NOTE: When replacing rear brake pads in service (maintenance) mode, the brake caliper piston must be compressed into the caliper housing. The brake caliper piston does not have to be rotated while compressing the piston.
    NOTE: The 
    EPB system will be deactivated, preventing parking brake application until service has been completed and service (maintenance) mode has been deactivated. Dependent on the cluster fitted to the vehicle the yellow EPB indicator will be illuminated, the red brake warning indicator will flash and Maintenance Mode will display on the message center.

    Deactivation

NOTE: Carry out the following service mode activation procedure to deactivate the EPB system.

  1. Set the ignition to ON.

  2. Press and hold the accelerator pedal and place the EPB switch in the APPLY (upward) position. Continue to hold the accelerator pedal and the EPB switch.

  3. Set the ignition to OFF then set the ignition to ON within 5 seconds. Continue to hold the accelerator pedal and the EPB switch.

  4. Continue to hold the accelerator pedal and EPB switch until depending on the cluster fitted to the vehicle, the yellow EPB indicator is no longer illuminated, the red brake warning lamp is no longer flashing and Maintenance Mode is no longer displayed in the message center.

NOTE: The EPB system will fully apply and release the parking brake to guarantee sufficient air gap between the rear brake pads and brake disc.

5. Release the accelerator pedal and the EPB switch.

Couple of questions for The_Bandit. As I've had my Mondy for less that a year and I'm unfamiliar with all this new gagetry stuff there are some v simple things I'm not sure about in relation to your post.

1. With a keyless car how do you turn an ignition on and off ?

2. I'm assuming a battery disconnection before commencing work would negate the need for what seems a long winded process. Although safety always needs to come 1st..

Just press the start button without your foot on the clutch

1. With keyless, I just press the START button.  No need to start the engine.

2. If you disconnect the battery, the EPB motor will not fully retract so you could damage it when winding back in.  Also the process of recalibrating to new thicker pads won't be completed either so more problems here too.
 

It isn't that long winded when you actually do it, just seems it when written down.

Handbrake needs to be off when you start the procedure. If your handbrake is on it will not work.

Hi tried all this but my 2016 mondeo not going into service mode it saying on my dash park brake malfunction and the red brake sign flashes 

Any ideas please

I have done around 10 vehs using the method described.

Don't know if it was a fluke/red herring or not but I found on 2 vehs that it only seemed to work if the procedure was followed with the veh on perfectly level plane/ground. Also the pistons just push backm no winding required
