mogs84
Hi all, I'm looking to buy a 2015 Focus Zetec. I've been hearing a lot about ecoboost recalls lately. Is there any way to check if my engine is affected? I've put the reg into various websites but they don't help much. Thanks in advance James
TomsFocus
The ETIS website is the one that should be most accurate. It seems to be glitching for me today though unfortunately.
mogs84
Thanks Tom, I'll check it out.
Criot
If it's a facelifted model which it is likely to be on a 2015, i'm fairly certain they are not affected by the original recall for the coolant leak.
mogs84
Ok great. I popped the VIN number into the ETIS website and had this returned. All seems good and ligit? Buying from a good dealership too. I got stung on my previous car and nervous about it happening again.
bronc
Is this an automatic? Read up on Ford's dual clutch transmission. If this one is equipped with it, I wouldn't touch it with a pole.
mogs84
Thanks Boris, Just finding out now! I haven't actually seen the car. Booked a test drive for tomorrow. All looks good on paper, but so did my last car and that turned out to be a nightmare.
bronc
I just checked on ETIS (you can see more stuff if you have an account). The car is indeed mated with the Ford PowerShift transmission. Stay away from it - just read this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_PowerShift_transmission#Faulty_operation and then Google Ford PowerShift. There is a design flaw in the transmission and it cannot be repaired for good. Chances are you will hate Ford for the rest of your life if you buy this car. Look for the 1.0 EcoBoost engine. The automatic used with it is a conventional torque converter one and doesn't have this issue - that is if you want an auto. Otherwise, all the petrol engines are pretty good, especially in the newer cars after the 2014 facelift.
mogs84
*****. It was looking so good too. Is this a huge issue then?

mogs84
Ok so, the guy at the Ford Dealership said this car doesn't have the transmittion. I'm confused now. Are they likely to lie? I'm buying this car through VW and they've spoken directly to Ford asking for me.
bronc
And here is the recall: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2015/MC-10072057-7690.pdf There are more experienced users than me around here so you might want to wait until they chime in. mogs84
Sorry to keep banging on. The guy at the garage is saying the 6 speed automatic transmission isn't the same as the power shift? I'm going to call Ford directly tomorrow before my test drive. Do you think they're trying to pull a fast one?
bronc
Just read the Wikipedia description for the PowerShift:The Ford PowerShift is a six-speed dual clutch semi-automatic transmission produced by the Ford Motor Company
bronc
You can also google "DPS6" (the transmission as listed in ETIS) and see what comes up.

Are they likely to lie? Most sales staff at dealerships are on bad hourly rates. But they can make £60+ for every car they sell in commission. I previously worked for ford, but not as sales staff. They denied knowledge of the ecoboost fault despite it being well known on the internet, here and even ford themselves acknowledge it. Thabkfully I got a full refund and ditched their dodgy faulty car. I went to another ford dealer - Bristol street motors and they were much better. Some dealerships will tell you what they need to if it means you’ll buy the car. Avoid Evans Halshaw and avoid whichever dealership it was that denied the fault when clearly it affects that car. Botus
never believe a word from a sales rep when buying anything... (best not to talk to them ever if you can avoid it) people good at sales have no decency, lying and bullsh1t is a game they enjoy as for the box they get a 5 year warranty these days... its the 2011 ones u need to worry about (design fault and poor seals leak oil, and the clutch material is rubbish) from 2014 the gearbox is fine, but the software is a bit ropey and the later clutch material is still an issue (again should be resolved under warranty no issues) from june 2016 there are no issues at all

Bear in mind it's the DCT250 box fitted to smaller output engines that is the problem child, the DCT450 fitted to the higher output engines doesn't have the same sh1te reputation.
Bwlmog
Hi bronc, I’ve been looking at a late 2016 Mondeo 2.0 TDI with Powershift, I understand it’s the “wet” transmission which requires a oil and filter change every 36,000 miles. I’m hearing conflicting stories on this variant. Some are saying it’s fine providing you keep the service intervals, whilst others are saying that it’s still has a high failure rate (although significantly better than the dry variant). I’d welcome your views on this please. Thanks in advance.

Your problems started the moment you used EH, I've never seen a car dealer chain with such consistently poor reviews online (virtually every site).
