Brake Pads (Worn between 1.6-3MM), Brake Discs (Worn Below Manufacture Min. Spec)

Dear All

I just went to Halford and do a brake check today. I found this on the reports

• Renew both front brake discs - Worn Below Manufacture Minimum Spec
• Renew both rear brake discs - Worn Below Manufacture Minimum Spec
• Renew both front brake pads - Worn between 1.6-3MM
• Renew both rear brake pads - Worn between 1.6-3MM

Do you think I need to change my brake discs? It looks fine, but I guess is the thickness less that manufacturer minimum specs 

For the brake pads, if I not mistaken the minimum requirement is 1.5MM? My MOT will be due next year Jan 2018. Do you think I need to change now? Or change after my next MOT?

From Haynes, front disk min thickness is 23mm, and rear disk is 9mm. Pad thickness min is 1.5mm (f & r).

I would not trust a vague report like that from a biased source. Stripping the brakes down for a good look is the only real way. The MoT will also look for corrosion on the disks that appreciably reduces the usable area, or extends across most of the braking zone. Rusty disks is, in my experience, a more common fail than thickness. Usually on the inside surface that is not easy to see until removed. But most MoT inspectors have x-ray vision for this sort of thing (or good lights & mirrors!).

If the pads or disks are near the limit, it may be better to change them now rather than wait for Winter. But that Halfrauds report tells you nothing of any use.

I just removed the wheel. If I not mistaken, I think break pads still quite thick as picture attached. But, Halfords says my both front brake pads are worn between 1.6-3MM. Did I missed anything from the checking?

You can check the thickness of the pads quickly by comparing with a drill bit of, say, 2 mm diameter.  If the pad material is are thicker than the bit then you at least get some idea of the correct thickness without the hassle of removing them to check with calipers.  I guess if you have the wheel off it's easy enough to check both this way?

Bet if you asked what the manufacturers spec is (and how thick the disc is) they wouldn’t even be able to tell you!
