bronc
With winter quickly approaching and no garage for my Focus I'm thinking of retrofitting the PTC heater to my 2012 Mk3. Has anyone else here done it? The pre-heater can be had for around 40-50 quid and from what I've found, the cables for connecting are present on 2011-12 cars. The part # according to catcar is 18K463, 1759679. However, the part numbers I see on eBay are BV6N-18D612-** Is it the same thing? It looks like this:
Abbadon
I would be interested in this - is this a cabin heater for when the engine is cold - I miss this feature from my S-max and from my last few cars!
bronc
Yes, that's what it does.

You should have one standard with yours being diesel. Have you checked ETIS for 'supplemental heater'?

Abbadon
Auxilliary is parking heater I believe though in ford speak... In our S-max manual Auxilliary is definitely the parking heater, not the PTC...

TomsFocus
Just checked a facelift 1.5 TDCi and that's the same as the PFL with supplemental but no mention of park or auxilliary. Very odd! Speed Control And ASLD With Supplemental Air Heater Conventional Instruments - Level 3 Also checked my neighbours ST-TDCi and that's the same as yours, less auxiliary heating. Edit - 2016 2.0 TDCi Zetec S also has supplemental PTC...so why wouldn't the ST? 😮 Less Speed Control With Supplemental Air Heater Conventional Instruments - Level 3 2nd edit (lol) - 1.6 EcoBoost, no mention of supplemental, but without auxiliary. I think aux must mean the PTC on these. Speed Control And ASLD Less Auxiliary Heater Conventional Instruments - Level
Abbadon
Well mine is a MK3.5, so im not sure what that means - either PTC isnt an option to select or not select, so its always or never there?
Abbadon
So why would we not have the PTC? cost down for mk3.5? question is can it be retrofitted? this cant be the first time someone has asked this?

The Mk3.5 diesels still get them as proved above, it's only the ST-TDCi that doesn't, I don't think cost is an issue with the ST though. The petrols don't get them as they heat up more quickly but I really can't understand why the diesel ST doesn't. I'd assume they get the same heater box as the petrol models so if Boris can retrofit one to his petrol you probably can to yours.
Abbadon
Could it be an ST related matter - Am i correct that the ST diesel was only introduced for Mk3.5, (2015 onward) so prior to that, all ST were petrol? Is there anything ST has that would prevent or make PTC not fit? I cant think of any other reason?
TomsFocus
Yeah you're right that they only brought out the diesel version at facelift but I don't see any reason that they couldn't use the heater box from the 'lesser' diesels on it, the climate control is the same after all. iantt
I've got one installed in my 1.0 ecoboost focus that I bought off eBay. The small wires are there in the loom of my car but the thick live and earth are not. I haven't got round to running the thick cable via fuse in battery box fuse box. Also it needs enabling via central car config.
Abbadon
Yeah I found a video on youtube in turkish, that shows them bolting a piece of loom to chassis in wheel arch, assuming thats the earth, the loom was there on that car, just not bolted up to the arch which is a bit odd. But i guess every bolt saved... Ill have to take a look in my car to see if its definitely not present, but I expect it isnt based on the list. Just seems a bit odd. bronc
Should I expect any significant differences between BV6N-18D612-AA and BV6N-18D612-BA? It was around 0* this morning and as soon as I got in the car I regretted I hadn't installed this earlier..
bronc
After doing some additional research I'm reaching the conclusion that this retrofit is not possible on the 1.6 EcoBoost without also replacing the alternator. The car comes with a 120A one if the auxiliary heater isn't fitted and with a 150A one if it is - http://catcar.info/ford/?lang=en&l=bWFya2V0PT1ldXJvfHxjYXRfaWQ9PTExMTA4fHxjYWJicj09R0NCOHx8dGhrPT0zfHxzdD09NjB8fHN0cz09eyIyMCI6IkV1cm9wZSIsIjMwIjoiRm9jdXMgQ0I4IDIwMTEtMjAxNSIsIjQwIjoiNCBFbGVjdHJpY2FsIiwiNTAiOiI0MTQwMiBFbGVjdHJpY2FsLkFsdGVybmF0b3IgQW5kIE1vdW50aW5ncyIsIjYwIjoiNDE0MDIwNUIgQWx0ZXJuYXRvciBBbmQgTW91bnRpbmdzOyAxLjZMIEVjb0Jvb3N0IFNDVGkgIn18fGFscGhhPT00fHxncm91cD09NDE0MDJ8fHNlY3Q9PTQwMDdBSkR8fHNldD09Qjg0MTQwMnx8aW1nPT1HMDIzNTE2NjA0fHxmMTI9PS03NDY1MjUxODQrMTM1. johncompu
Hello from Greece! I have a 1.5d Diesel Mk3.5. It had the power wiring for the ptc hidden under the passenger carpet. By the way the problem is that it makes a 12v+ but the Black ground cable is not connected to ground. Anyone know where to find it to Bolt it? This is quite strange as the 125PS 1.0 EcoBoost comes with a 150A alternator as standard.. Hello, there is no problem with the alternator. The car have all the safety systems to protect the alternator and battery. I have installed ptc heater with the 120amp alternator on 1.5 diesel no problem. But! If you have the lights on, the fan full speed, heated seats on etc, maybe the car would stop the signal to ptc or decrease it to 50% or lower in order to not overload the alternator and battery! Go ahead install it! Then with FORSCAN you can check the percent the PTC Heater works.
