Luke_Anderson
Hi guys, need some help as I’m struggling! I have a 2014 mk3 with factory cruise control, I bought a mk3.5 steering wheel with cruise control switches. When I plug into the clockspring the mfd controls and the radio controls work fine, however I can’t seem to get the cruise control switches working, can anyone help? TomsFocus
Does your new wheel have adaptive cruise buttons or just the standard cruise?
Luke_Anderson
Just the standard cruise with limiter, I’m wondering if I need to change the clockspring?
TomsFocus
You shouldn't have to change the clock spring unless it got damaged during the swap. I'd try resetting the BCM first personally. Can you check if the buttons are actually working, I think the button test mode still works on mk3, press and hold the heated rear screen button while turning ignition on (not engine) until you hear a beep. Then pressing any button should make a beep...try the cruise buttons. Also, I know it sounds daft, but sometimes it takes a few drives for cruise to start working, seen this on both Fords and VAG cars but not sure why it happens, presumably some sort of soft reset of one of the modules. JW1982
The Cruise Control switch is basically just a resistance circuitry. Every button has its own resistance value. To rule out the switch as the cause of the problem you have to compare all resistor values of both the old and the new Cruise Control switches. On the Focus MK3/MK3.5 the clockspring is a CANbus module and not just a simple clockspring.
Luke_Anderson
Thanks for the help guys, I have to figure this one out as the newer wheel is so much nicer! The cruise buttons come down to 3 wires going into the clockspring, I tried all the combinations of these wires to no avail. How would I test the resistance of the buttons to compare? with the help of google translate I found this https://www.drive2.ru/l/9562741/?page=0#comments according to this ( if you read the comments at the bottom ) you need to change the clockspring as well due to different resistances. Any thoughts?

Button trick didn’t work, The only reason I’d say driving it isn’t going to help is because if I plug the original wheel in the buttons work straight away 🤔

Botus
I would have thought if the new wheels buttons don't beep on the test sequence, then JW1982's point " the clockspring is a CANbus module " is where your issue lies and you need to fit a compatible one and or code the control module
Luke_Anderson
What I meant was the window demister and ignition doesn’t put it into test mode
mastachaz
i dont know if that give any idea but when I retrofit sensors for mk3 there was only sound they start show on screen after day so maybe will get work by itself
Luke_Anderson
All done 🎉🎊 changed the slip ring for one from a facelift and now everything works perfectly. So for anyone else wanting to do this ( the facelift wheel is so much nicer ) if you have cruise control you need to change the slip ring, if you don’t have cruise then you don’t 👍🏻👍🏻

Thought it seemed weird they can just be swapped on the ZS, ZS doesn't have cruise though!
Luke_Anderson
Yeah the other buttons worked fine it was just the cruise. If you wanted to swap and don’t have cruise you’d also need to swap the insert on the airbag 👍🏻
worcesternaf
What was the part number of the updated slip ring?

Can you help me with that? I did the same swap os wheels. Mk3.5 on a mk3. I repalced my clockspring twice. One from the 2017 Ford Escape and other from a 15-18 Focus ST. Neither one made my Cruise Control work... I wonder if I have to replace the steering angle sensor as well. Do you have the part number of the part you had to replace to make it work? Thanks in advance!
DaSingh
I keep saying I won't do any other mods but tempted by this. Is there a guide on swapping steering wheel?
LUNASYNC
Ok I figured out what the original poster meant slip ring == clockspring, the mechanism with the spring. Also the airbag bezel / frame is not the same between the mk3 and mk3.
