2003 Ford Focus drives and cuts out for no apparent reason. Garage said fuel pump needs replacing - near on £1000.00!  They say this is a common problem??  Any suggestions?

The car has only been bought recently and they said there were no problems with it. Don’t know if filter has been done. Dealer sent pump for testing on mainland - didn’t bother testing as they’ve said it’s a common problem and suggested just getting new pump without testing original - car only cost £200  - think person it was purchased from may have known there was an expensive problem. Should I suggest they change fuel filter first?
