Does this Focus 1.8 diesel have a particle filter

Just went out with my brother for him to buy a 2009 Focus 1.8 diesel estate (he bought it).  I thought  the 1.8 did not have a particle filter whatever year it is built. But the owner (who has owned it for 6 years) says it has a particle filter. he volunteered this, we did not ask, not really sure why he would mention it at all.

The details from Ford Etis are below. It was originally owned by the Police. The seller was the 2nd owner and has not had any modifications done. Does anyone have any idea if this actually might have a particle filter?  would the Police have had modifications to make it greener.

I've never heard of it even being an option on the 1.8.  I'd be very surprised if they wrote a whole new PCM map just for a few police cars to include a DPF.  It would also be a pretty poor idea imo, police cars don't travel far, most of thier driving is local.

I can't see anything on that ETIS page to prove otherwise.  But I guess the best thing to do is physically look.  If it's a DPF it'll have pressure pipes & sensor which a cat won't.

I am thinking same as you with what you say about PCM map etc.

This car had 92k miles at first MOT in 2012 which is pretty high. Now has 138k. It is silver , it has had some decals on at some point as there is a sticker in the boot done by the Police decal company (Bluelite).  No idea what sort of Police car this was. Not the sort to chase criminals I would have thought. 

It's just a bit strange what he said. Something like, by the way these don't have catalytic converters on, they have a particulate filter instead which collects the soot and dumps it now and then. He had it six years, not a part time trader or anything like that. I think he was just wrong most likely.

Check what oil has been used at service. Ford's Formula F 5W-30 is a mid-SAPS oil, used on Lynx without DPF.

If low-SAPS oil is used than your Focus has DPF, tough chances are slim.

Since this was a police car, add 30% more miles to the clock and as a must check the wet belt and camshaft belt as well as steering/suspension and DMF-clucth.

The cat on the 1.8 is under the car, just behind the engine.  But if it had a DPF, the pressure sensor would be mounted on the battery box with a single plug and couple of small rubber pipes, that's the easiest thing to check for without getting on the floor.

The fact the previous owner thinks DPFs collect soot and then 'dump' it shows he hasn't got a clue about them.  Probably just been told that all diesel Focus' have them from a mate with a 1.6/2.0TDCi I reckon. :smile:

Ford don't use low SAPS on DPF models, they use the same Formula F 5w30 on everything until the EcoBoost came along.

The 1.8 Lynx engine did not have a DPF.
I'ts the exact same engine as the earlier 1.8 tdci mk2 Focus engine which I know for a fact never had DPF.
That's why many chose it as an option over the 1.6 tdci which did have DPF and caused problems due to a messy eolys refill procedure.

That was the exact equation I used when I bought my MK2 Lynx engined Focus years ago.  Oh and the oil starvation issues = exploding turbo and don't forget the injectors dying prematurely. :whistling:
