Insurance?

So I'm looking to start modding my focus a bit but I'm scared in regards to insurance ie voiding it etc what's the best company to go with in regards to modifications etc and what company do people use if they have heavily modded them?

Thanks

Some mainstream insurers like Admiral will allow declared mods (you might pay a higher premium though) but they won't cover the cost of them in the event of a claim (unless they are factory fitted options). If you're increasing the value of your car significantly you may want to use a specialist that will. I'll defer to others who do for recommendations (my ST is totally stock). Modding and not declaring will of course void your insurance.

I have a Celica GT4 which is fitted with a full body kit, 18" wheels, and a few engine mods. Elephant didn't charge me a penny extra when I declared them all, though being an old f**t may have aided in the decision as I'm far too old to be a boy racer - honest! LOL

I have yet to do any mods but was getting a rough idea on insurance prices for a remap and exhaust, LV came out as the cheapest usually.

I declared that my car had parking sensors and said I had a dashcam to get a rough idea. The dashcam made a huge difference to the end quote making it not much more than I am paying unmodified. Most places wanted 150 more for the same mods.

I contacted Adrian Flux to get an idea but they were quoting much more than LV.

The dashcam made a major difference to my quotes. I'm not sure what the requirements are for image quality or if you need to use a certain brand or have it professionally installed though.

I've always thought about a dash cam but concerned I will be storing evidence lol

But be careful with Admiral as I understand they're the only insurer to ask if you've attended a speed awareness course, as well as the usual stuff. If they ask you must of course be honest. If you've never been naughty, no worries😁

In nregards to the dashcam, your insurer may ask for evidence that you do in fact, have a dashcam (otherwise everyone would just say yes) So you'd need to use that very dashcam to show your cars registration plate, so take it out of the car, show the car, and its registration and submit the video (if they ask for proof)

Is that an issue? They can ask what they want and if their quote is high you go somewhere else.

I'm with Admiral (we have 2 of our cars on a multicar policy) and I don't recall being asked about that (not that it would have made any difference).

Just a tip that was passed on by the (ex-police) instructors when I did attend such a course a while back. One lady was with Admiral and had indeed been asked the question and of course answered yes. Maybe they don't always ask, but the point the instructors were making is that because of data sharing between insurers, if you had disclosed it to Admiral you would effectively have disclosed it to all.

Sorry we couldn't help out with your insurance but thanks for giving us a try.
