Focus 1.4

was timed at knockhill by a riend who works there and its doing those times stock in fact there was a tester when the focus was launched who had better 0-60 times than ford stated anywhere between 8.5- 9.1 is the average times it can do it quicker but thats rattling every last bit out of it

I know that a 1.8 astra can do it in 8.5 and in truth i always wondered why the focus was so much slower than the vauxhalls yet on the open road the fords are on the back of the vauxhalls no problems weather thats down to stupidity or luck is beyond me and for definate i cant keep up wich my cus's 1.8 coupe when he cains that. Yet i can hammer down a 1.6 16v astra no problems surley there cant be much difference in a 1.6 and 1.8 in both cars

personall i think its down to a few things the condition of the engine for 1 a well serviced healthy engine will perform better and i know mines well looked after and the engines healthy and drivers the focus can rev and the zetec engine likes to rev where some cars dont and of course tyhe driver i find its down to the gear changes myself i use maximum revs and double clutch that way you dont lose valuable power just fitted this gear knob got it for free post-8800-126772497506_thumb.jpg

If im absoutly naling it i "rip" shift its not the smoothest of ways and its not to good for the car but it means minimum time off the power. The beast is going in for a service soon and an mot but its kept absoutly immaculiate abeit a tad muddy i think he needs some new sparks and the filters could probs do with a change after being on the car for a good 10 months. Mine had the offical ford ritchbook chrome one on but it did my f***in head in was freezing cold in winter and burned my hand on it in summer  cant win lol.

What equipment at Knockhill was this person using? Excuse my skepticism, but having had the pleasure of driving a number of 1.8 petrols, it's just very hard to comprehend. I also don't understand how you mention "rattling every last bit out of it". It either does it, or it doesn't, surely there should be no inbetween? Off topic, apologies.

8.5 seconds keeping the revs at 6000rpm and above with short shift double clutching about 10 quids worth of fuel in the car. all car 0-60 times are established using safe methods ie they wont push the revs too high the fuel tank is usually half full or more there are many sts that standard have more bhp than ford state and are quicker 0-60 than the figures state perhaps the cold air helped but above 3000rpm my focus seriously shifts ive left many a car embarassed, also all cars after oct 2001 were slower in top speed and 0-6,0 mine is estimated at 9.7 seconds yet the same car built after october 2001 is suddenly a second slower no idea why and the top speeds cut from 124mph to 113 or 117 i think it is as for equipment its stuff used for the race days proper equipment ill ask what it is and hope his boss isnt on here sad.gif

You may wish to check your info there. The MK1 facelift (2001 onwards) 1.8 Zetec, according to my brochure here, shows 0-62 at 10.2s in 3,4 and 5 door, with top speed of 123 mph (and this figure was unchanged from the pre-facelift). ST170 is 0-62 in 8.2 and top speed 134 mph.

http://www.ffoc/modules.php?name=Focus_Info&file=focusintro (online link to other page for reference)

You'd need to be shaving a full two seconds off the book time in order to be getting the times you're claiming, which is, in my opinion, extremely unlikely from a stock 1.8 Focus with no modifications.

mines pre facelift official figures are 0-60 9.9 seconds 123mph and 113bhp mine also has quickshift and a modified intake but its basically stock i doubted the 8.5 myself forget ffoc figures theyre rubbish bear in mind ford state 113bhp and 160nm torque yet on a dyno mine is 115bhp and 168nm torque @3750rpm which isnt unusual.... some cars show better figures some show lower.

ive seen stock cars showing 10bhp more than the book states i have officialy at crail done it in 9.1 seconds that was on a nice warm day so even at that .9th of a second aint bad coincidentaly the st170 my friends mate has is 8.0 which on torque cars has been proved as the correct time for a factory stock car so even at im still way slower than a st170 . if you actually have a look no other site agrees with ffoc figures carfolio show the time as 9.8 seconds parkers 9.9 seconds ford official figure 9.8 seconds for the mk1 ford focus zetec e 1.8 after the facelift the time changed to the 10.2 that you state and my work manual with all facts and figures shows the same wether the 8.5 is correct or just my mates dodgy equipment 9.1 is definate and as shown dont believe fords official fiogures they tell you the official mpg and its proved to be a lot less i bet if you dynod youre car it will show better figures thean ford do.

the reason is simple the cars have to pass strict emission tests so the cars are slightly dulled down to pass them and make the euro nuts happy once the car hits production the figures are not as strict but well within the tolerances

1.4 s is a HUGE amount of time when you are looking at 0-60 times. That's the difference between a Fiesta ST and a Focus ST225!

mondy st220 0-60 is 7.3secs, top speed 147mph, 27mpg, I.G. 16

focus st 0-60 is 6.3secs, top speed 144mph, 28mpg, I.G. 16

but i have seen 3 standard ones dynoed at 232 to 235BHP yet ford state 222bhp?

the fiesta st of 1999 could only do it in 10 seconds

my mates one FordFair - 0-60, 8.88secs but a lot more torque than my focus a hell of a lot

these are all standard cars

and official figures so 1.4 between the two aint quite right 8.88 and 6.3 try 2.5 seconds of a difference between the two

Even 0.9 seconds is a huge gap too. That's the difference between the Golf GTI (7.0) (FSI) and a Fiesta ST (7.9), lol!

Focus ST is 6.5, and Fiesta ST is 7.9 (8.0 depending on where you look)

Sure, but I'm merely pointing out that these differences are a lot more significant than people may think :)

Every morning insted of "hi mike" i get 2.5 seconds said to me by my mate (hes got a 206 gti180) because i think there like 7.5 and mines around the 10sec mark really does my head in when he sais it lol. Best car i think though is the fiesta st's because there what 8 odd seconds give or take standard but u can buy kits to take them down to about 6.9 secs but they look standard so u can annoy the chav's in vts saxos even more than ever because when they go on to parkers to have a gander at 0-60 times they get confused haha simple things  . Or even better a st 225 focus with a remap ooooooo dreamssssss

not really as i said its been dynod with slightly more power and torque than ford claim so that probably shaves 0.2-0.3 off so whats left isnt hard with the right conditions trust me it does it in 9.1 seconds that was at crail maybe you need to take youres out and see what she can really do not what ford tell you she can do remember i can do it 9.1 but i dont have the torque of the bigger cars i have it only after 3750 rpm some have it a lot sooner than that.

i never really use it its nice to know its there and to be honest below 3750rpm the car feels like it needs a boost keep the revs high dont let it drop below 6000rpm and youre car will surprise you the zetec likes to rev so give it some once in a while to clean the pipes out at least thats what i tell the mrssmile.gif .

i mean the rs1800 engine is my engine with ford cams and a remap slightly bigger injectors and poof you have from 115bhp to 150bhp The hottest n/a version was the ST170 with solid lifters, steel rods, waisted valves and variable valve timing (VVT). which again is a modified zetec e 1800 engine and the escort gti was a zetec-e so theres more power in there

0-60 times are something people will tend to grow out of over time. It's not really practical, other than from a standing start - and if you blitz to 60 from a standing start as fast as you can all day long, you're probably a bit of a chav. Your mate sounds like a real 'cool dude' ... !

In-gear overtaking ability and whatnot is far more impressive in my opinion and a lot more practical. But I digress. I had the ST170 and it was fun for a while but it gets tedious. I'd much rather have something with a turbo (for the torque), or a large N/A block.

on a track possibly on uk roads dont make a damn difference theres not a single car that will have what the manufacturers state some are under th epower some are over im just lucky its a bit over and not a bit under besides no testers ever take the revs to the limits they change in the limits the manufacturers tell them to personally im tempted to put the cams in and get the emap and have 130bhp not sure hoew it effects the torque and ide need to upgrade the brakes but its easily done

The ST170 engine was a modified 130bhp 2.0 Zetec and was derived from the USA 'SVT' from Ford - a much stronger bottom-end than the normal engine. It also included a 65mm bore stainless exhaust with uprated CAT, gas-flowed headers, dual-stage intake manifold DMF and a 6-speed Getrag 'box that has never been used in another Focus (even the ST/RS).

My diesel is pig slow. I don't think it's clever to be keeping revs over 3000 rpm

Initially there were 90, 105 and 115bhp 1800cc Escort versions, with 115 and 130bhp 2 litre Mondeo units too. There were also 130bhp RS1800 Fiesta/XR3i variations with revised cams and re-mapped ECU’s. The hottest n/a version was the ST170 with solid lifters, steel rods, waisted valves and variable valve timing (VVT). The motor went on to power the Focus RS but in turbocharged form. Both the ST and RS engines were confusingly re-badged as a Duratec. http://www.burtonpower.com/technical_1/zetec_e.aspx try these guys they know theyre stuff.

thanks for the comment no i dont do standing starts all day in fact the car rarely breaks a speed limit with an 18month old in the rear and no im not a chav either nor is my friend who is just a fast ford nut we both work both have kids and drive almost everywhere with kids in the car so once in a while the car with no one but me in it gets to stretch its legs the only reasin it was dynod was its a friends garage and he had the thing installed i was helping him out and we stuck it on out of curiosity so i resent the personal remarks. for me debate over when it gets to personal remarks

There was not a single personal remark made. I was simply stating that people who DO blitz to 60 all the time are chavs. If you take offence to that, that's your prerogative :) It wasn't directed at you - you'd know if I was dishing out deregatory comments, I promise you! (though reading it again, I can see why it would appear that way)

The reference on that website is to the Zetec-E architecture, rather than a modified 1800cc engine; which makes sense, as a the ST170 is a 1997cc engine and has not been made from an 1800 with increased displacement!

then ill accept that it wasnt meant that way it just read that way yeah basically what i mean is since the escort gti and rs1800 is the same engine as my cars minus the remap and cams then with a simple cam and ecu upgrade if i wanted to i can up the power quite cheaply a big hike for not a lot of cash. i agree i live in chav city where every car has an exhaust that looks like it should hold a football lots of cars that look like the owners were watchin the fast and the furious on drugs and dodgy bodykits half held on with tape and low and behold 4 exhausts popping out the rear of which only 1 actually does anything and the fly up and down the road its straight and quiet and a national speed limit need i say more you always know by the ridiculous rumble of the exhausts as they race each other
