Spare tyre Vignale

The Vignale comes with a tyre repair kit rather than a spare. My friend's Fiesta had a flat the other day and the foam was useless so she had to call the AA. This has got me wondering.

I am thinking of removing the loud speaker in the boot and having a spare wheel instead. Would it be possible to have a full size wheel with a proper tyre rather than a spacesaver?.

You can't have a spare with the panoramic roof.

You can't order one in conjunction with a pan roof (or couldn't last time I looked at the ordering guide) - not sure why. However, at least one member on here (I think it was @Jonson?) ordered their car with pan roof and when it arrived found the well was empty, so intended to fit a spare.

The Vignale comes with B&O which means subwoofer in the wheel well. I would quite like to know myself if you can just unplug the subwoofer to free up the well,  and the rest of the system would still work. I might consider an ST-2 in the future (there seem to be a good few ST-2s in the Ford Direct system) but would like a spare so this would be useful to know).

You can’t have one a standard or an option, but you can with a bit of imagination.

I ordered a space saver from eBay complete with jack and wheel brace. I used a length of 13mm stud cut to size and bolted through the retaining hole to secure both the spare wheel and sub. I made up a plywood box to cover the wheel and sub, now the load floor is roughly about the same size as when the adjustable load floor kit is fitted.

You also can’t have a towbar fitted with a panoramic roof, although no one can find out why. The pipe work and fluid reservoir are near the rear chassis rails where the bar would bolt on, but there’s still room to fit it.

Yep, my car was ordered with panoramic roof; spare wheel well was there and contained stowage for emergency sealant kit. I took that out and put in a spare wheel. You can buy all the spare wheel parts for the full kit separately. I'd still like to know why you can't spec. a spare wheel with the roof....

I'm pretty sure you would be able to remove the sub if you wanted - it looks like there is an alternative to the spare wheel retaining bolt which fixes the sub down like a spare wheel.

i think everyone should carry a spare wheel. I ask people I know about this and they say ' a spare is no good to me I wouldn't know how to put it on anyway'  that's not really the point, even if you don't know how to put it on, someone else could, a passer-by etc (as one did once for my wife).

it's night time, your tyre is damaged beyond what the can of foam can fix. The breakdown service say they are busy and it will be two hour wait and your are 100 miles from home. you phone a mobile tyre fitting service who quote you some exhorbitant price (and if they come out and find the wheel rim is damaged too what happens then).  You will be wishing you carried a spare at this point, even if it's a spacesaver and needs to be driven slower.

and another point - if you have held your wheel trims on with cable ties as some people do, make sure you have something to cut the cable ties with.

and another point - the standard tyre wheel spanners you get from the car makers do not give much leverage - carry something better.

Yes, that looks to be the case in the ones I've looked at. What I can't establish is if the rest of the stereo still works with the sub removed/disconnected. None of the sales staff I've asked have known and have seemed oddly reluctant to let me pull the sub out of a car they have in stock to see what happens!😀

It does still work, but I like my music, so that’s why I made it all fit together, and the space you lose isn’t too great. There’s also room to store stuff under the box I made too!

Thanks guys. Main question is about having a "proper" spare wheel rather than a spacesaver. It might not be a perfect match with the Vignale's 18" rims but better than a spacesaver with it's limitations on speed/distance.

Andy, many thanks for confirming the stereo will still work without subwoofer - that will save me trying to pull out a plug while the salesman's not looking😀 I see your car is a Focus, I'm not sure you'd have much useful bootspace left if you tried putting a wheel on top of the sub in a Fiesta.

I know there have been several people on here who have fitted in a full size spare on the previous model Fiesta Mk 7.5, although it stuck up more than the spacesaver and some packing may have been needed around it for the boot floor to sit a little higher up. I haven't been able to find a thread relating specifically to the current Mk 8. Just looking in my wheel well now, which currently houses a spacesaver, it looks as if it should be possible but may sit a little higher, so may still require a bit of packing to support the floor.

This may help you, I don’t know about your specific car but you can see the problem I have plus the help I got!

I probably haven’t updated my profile settings, but if you look at my profile picture, I have a 140 Fiesta Vignale.
I tried the stereo without the sub whilst trying to decide how to fit the spare wheel. I won’t deny the box I made hasn’t taken up a bit of boot space; however I now have the bonus of an almost flat load floor with the seat backs down, but also where the wheel well is, there’s no dip in the carpet either, so I don’t need to worry about damaging anything if I have to carry anything heavy or awkward in the boot. If I have to carry suitcases etc for holidays, then all I have to do is take the parcel shelf out; a small price to pay for the security of a spare wheel.

We all seem to forget that when we change cars.😀 But that makes your clever mod even more interesting, thanks Andy. I guess though, going back to the original question, a full size wheel would rob too much boot space if the subwoofer was left in place?

Hi to all.

While in a Trust Ford showroom after getting my FIESTA Heater airflow box replaced (it cost nearly 1200.00 to have the whole dash removed, a new 'airflow box' inserted and then reassembly in the workshop, several hours' time involved in all of that), I took the opportunity to see the Vignale. A lovely car, but on learning that it has no spare wheel, it is off my list for choice vehicle in the future. I liked that it had a 'decent' 4-cylinder engine, I do not need woofers in the boot, I agree with the people here who say a proper spare wheel is needed.

Has Ford forgotten the great cars it used to make: the Ford 1600E of many years ago; the Capre 3 litre; The RS Escort. etc.

But I gues the gadgets attract some younger drivers these days!

Yes, I think you’re right that a full size would rob too much space.

I've just got a space saver for my ST which has the Bo play sub. I specd the variable boot floor and it just about fits under so I have both under my boot floor. You could probably make a second boot floor to go over it if you wanted to do the same.

Looks good, Andy. Don't know about the OP, but I find boot space a bit tight anyway (My Mrs is a stranger to the concept of travelling light😀), so I think for me it'd have to be  a case of out with the subwoofer, in with the spare wheel!

Hi Andy, I'm new here and was asking about the space saver wheels earlier in the week. I have a space saver from a 2012 Titanium that I want to fit into my new Vignale when it arrives soon, much in the same way as you have. Do you know if the 2012 15" will fit the car? I can see that there are space savers for 2008-2017 and then 2018 onwards, but don't really want to buy another if I really don't have to. Also, I'm very interested to see how you built your plywood 'riser'. Are you able to post any pics of it please? Many thanks in advance...

We have bought complete spare wheel sets of eBay for both our fiestas. £30 or so. Don’t like not having a spare, foam won’t fix a rip in a tyre

Hi, your 15” space saver should fit without any problems. Do you intend to keep the sub too, or are you going to unplug it?

If you’re keeping the sub, you’ll need a way of securing both; I used a length of threaded stud to keep everything together.

I won’t be able to take any photos until next weekend, when in fact, I plan to finish the job off properly.

Hope you can wait until then.

Hi Andy,

Many thanks for the reply. Yes I plan to keep the sub. Looks like I'm getting the car on Sunday now but can certainly wait for photos as I'd very much like to do something like you have.

Chat again next weekend.

Best regards

Vince

As promised here are the photos:

This shows the sub and the space saver in the spare wheel well, note the carpet on the boot floor so the box doesn’t rattle.

The open end of the box that faces the back of the car, note the fabric that I’ve stuck on the corners of the box, so the boot trim doesn’t get damaged. The fabric is in fact Velcro. Before I stuck the Velcro on, I sanded the corners round.

Left-hand edge of box against boot trim, showing more Velcro tape stuck to boot trim, to keep any damage to trim to a minimum when lifting box for access.

As above, only this time right-hand side of boot.

Original boot mat, tucked down behind rear seats and rear edge of box. This is not a perfect solution, as the rear seats do need moving to remove the box and therefore the spare wheel; however for £20 for the materials and and old piece of carpet I’m quite pleased with the result. It’s not as good as the optional boot floor that can be ordered with the car (not sure of parts are available for retrofit), but neither does it pretend to be.

Hi Andy,

Many thanks indeed for the photos of your box solution to the sub woofer & spare tyre issue. It looks great and I think I will do something very similar just as soon as I get a chance!

Very best regards
