Mk2 Gear Knob and Gaitor

Recommended Posts

My gear knob is an original and is starting to show signs of wear and the leather has become rough at the edge so uncomfortable to use.I have looked on Ebat and seems the cheap one they have from China doesnt seem to fit from what the reviews say.The original Ford part is silly money so trying to look for something that will do the job thats resonably priced that will do the job and looks close enough to the original.Anyone any ideas?

Thanks in advance everyone.

This one I linked is for a facelift model, the pre-facelift one has a smaller mounting trim although the gaiter and knob would still fit with a wee bit of modification.

I ordered one of the silver ones ,went to fit it today and the gator surround dropped straight through the facia cut out!!! Really annoyed as it seems theres loads saying its for pre and post facelift dates so im puzzled as to if i should try again. Stoney, you ordered from the German page mate?

If you are handy with pliers and a needle and still have the original surround and gaiter then you can modify the facelift one to fit.
The gaiter is stapled to a black ring which clips into the silver ring and can be unclipped if you are careful (the black ring is easily broken).
Unclip the bits then loosen / pull the staples that hold the gaiter to the ring.
Do the same with the facelift parts.
Transfer the new gaiter to the old ring and stitch through the staple holes, the gaiter will stretch to fit.
Do not be tempted to remove the new knob from the facelift gaiter as you'll never get it off without breaking the collar and even if you could you'll need a vice or a press to clip it back together (been there and tried that).

Or this option-

Sadly the one that arrived didnt work either as it was to small.Seems many are advertising the gear knobs as being 04-11 but the MK2.5 has a bigger cut out than the MK2 so doesnt work.Looks funny enough like the German Ebay ones do seem bigger but having now sent three back i dont fancy messing about with German ones.Losing hope now and sadly not as nifty with the pliers as you are matey .

  • Hi mate, any joy with getting one to fit? I seem to have the mk2 facelift as ive bought a replacement gaiter and its too small for my car. Been looking high and low for a mk 2.5 gaiter but cant seem to find one anywhere

Best way to decide whether the gaiter is for a mk2 or mk2.5 is that the mk2 gaiter has an elasticated top that slips around a groove on a gearknob whereas the mk2.5 type is integral (knob is secured with a plastic collar).
