John McMahon9885599
Hi there, We have a 2011 Ford Focus Zetec (UK market), and we know that it's possible to lock the car from the inside with the switch above the door levers. But is it possible to have this car lock its doors automatically when we start moving? If this is not possible, can we have this added and if so, how much is it likely to cost? Thanks. TomsFocus
Yes, totally possible. You can do it yourself with ELMConfig and a modified ELM327 cable (around £15). Ford won't do it, but if you can find a Ford specialist I can't imagine they'd charge more than about £30 to do it for you.
DaveT70
If you use forscan or focccus software (which is free) and buy yourself an elm327 OBD connector you can activate it yourself. Plenty of how to guides out there on youtube etc. It's simply a matter of connecting to the car, selecting BCM (Body Control Module) select config/programming, select auto locking by speed, change dropdown to enable and save

I'm guessing that the cable connects to some sort of ECM? Where is this done?
TomsFocus
The cable connects to the cars OBD port. It's just above the drivers side cubby hole on the Mk2 and you'll need ELMConfig to do it. If you've got a mk3 (don't think so as you said about lock buttons on doors!) you have to remove the sliding cubby by squeezing the sides and use FoCCCus instead.
John McMahon9885599
We bought an adaptor, and downloaded FORScan Lite. I can see the vehicle details, but when I try to add a module, there is no 'BCM' one available. The modules I do add don't seem to move. And I can't find any mention of 'focccus' software on the app store. Even allowing for it to be a typo, still can't see it.
John McMahon9885599
Ah, so it looks like the iOS version doesn't have the full set of features. I need the Windows version, and I don't have that, as this is a Mac household. I can feel a VM coming on..
DaveT70
Yes, Windows is best version with a USB preferably ELM327 (modified is even better to switch between CAN networks but not important if you only want to activate auto locking) If you were close to me (Black Country) I'd offer you to pop round and I'd do it for you.

That would be very much appreciated, mate. Unfortunately, we're in south east London. Borrowed a friend's Windows laptop and tried to run that, but it couldn't connect to the WiFi. I've ordered the USB one from amazon.

Unikarl
I’ve got forscan on my laptop. Full version with the elm327 thing. I’ve only messed with my mondeo so far but if you want to have a go at sorting your car with it you can do. I’m based in the docklands, east London. John McMahon9885599
Hi Guys, Sorry not to have responded sooner. I bought myself a one-year extended license for ForScan, and sat in my car with the laptop connected for what must have been twenty minutes. But I cannot see how to activate the door-locking? I went through every section, every menu .. nothing. Help!

I got elmconfig : http://civil.iffc.ru/ELMConfig/ I save it to the Desktop, and then extract the files. I run the exe. The error is that an ocx file is not present or is not registered. When I tried to set 'GEM' to change the door locking, it asked if the adaptor had a toggle on it. Of course, it doesn't, and I'm damned if I'm spending any more money. Two adaptors, a licence for ForScan.. So if the offer is still open, I can try to come up to you sometime next week?

Little to gain, its prime use is to make people in the car feel less vulnerable in countries where crime is a bit higher than you want. Its not very effective, the element of fear and surprise works far better when you shatter the side glass unexpectedly and take what you want. Alternatively as there's an element of risk to the mugger…. you just do it the south African way and shoot the people in the car, saves shouting and they don't fight back. In which case locking the doors has only one effect, that of wearing out the door locks
Guy Heaton
I've seen inner city bag snatches in London. I want auto locking, had it on an 11 year old car, madness I can't have it on a brand new one
Botus
but that's the point I'm making, when you shatter the side window the people in the car are in shock and its far safer to snatch the bag... so locking the doors does nothing (except cost you money in repairs)
Guy Heaton
Why remove the choice of wether to have it? I can choose from 5000 different types of coffee on Sainsbury's but I can't choose wether to have auto lock?

Basically you could sue Ford if the doors remain locked in an impact and you end up with life altering injuries because the emergency services couldn't get you out quickly enough. If you chose to lock the doors yourself with the button then it's not Fords problem. Hopefully some Russians will develop an ELMConfig/FoCCCus type software for the Mk4 soon... That's my understanding but TBH I don't see it makes any sense. AFAIK Ford still configure the Autolocking in other countries including the USA and they are perhaps the most litigious country! and is configuring in the Autolocking menu but having the default 'Disabled' really much different. The user would still have to make a definitive decision to enable it. It's as though Ford Europe are saying ' we've decided you can't have autolocking' now don't confuse us with facts!
Botus
labour rates are high in the UK ….. issues should be resolved at root cause, locking the door will just mean they smash the window or wait till you park before mugging you
