Lenny
Hi all, I'm looking for advice on fitting some H4 which are dual filament bulbs My mate has a 2000 registered 1.0 Litre 79BHP Toyota yaris nick named the "chicken chaser" to use for commuting 20 miles to work each day, I've gotten a lift to work in it a few times and hes complained about it needing a sixth gear as its revved out in 5th 😄 and also the quality of the headlights aren't fantastic. The headlights dont have a projector lens there just a large single lens, So; Has anyone got advice on fitting some H4 LED without blinding other road users? Or is it best just to fit some osram night breaker bulbs? Thanks
zain611
I was thinking either those osram bulbs you mentioned or even the Philips Xtreme vision bulbs or even their white vision bulbs which are I heard close to xenon white. Problem with LED is its kind of unpredictable where the light will shine in a housing designed for a halogen bulb.

Philips Xtreme vision it is then found them cheap on amazon 18 pounds I'm also going for a 15" 216W LED light bar, the reg plate is 12" wide so 2.5" either side of the reg should almost fill the lower grill with a reg plate mounting bracket so it will recess in the lower grill underneath the reg plate And to ensure theres no horse playing around with the light bar that could attract the law; I'm purchasing this piggy back harness which plugs in to the existing H4 headlight socket and provides a replacement H4 socket to go in to the factory headlight. The loom then provides a power supply for the light bar which means or results in the driver only being able to activate the light bar as part of the full beam. So if you flash someone; the light bar also illuminates Or If you turn on full beam; the light bar comes on too, But under no other circumstances does it illuminate as this lad is always out for a bit of fun, I don't want to be the cause of getting in to trouble with the law, And maybe a rear badge 😂 Or better still 😂🤣😭 Overall including those Philip's bulbs and delivery everything is coming in under 90 pounds which if we were both drinkers would consume over a bank holiday weekend, All good fun, I'll order now and when it all arrives I'll present it to him in a box 😄 theres a week holiday coming up give us somthing to do instead of working six days.
zain611
Did you check the Philips white vision also? Doesn't give a longer through of light like the Xtreme vision but they say its whiter. Isn't that light bar overkill 🤣. Does he drive a lot on rural unlit roads?

zain611
Those look to be an updated / better version as they say ultra on them. I'd say you'd decide on which bulbs to get as some of the reviews say it wasn't a proper white light.

Looking forward to the items arriving next week; I got a bit click happy on amazon with everything; I ended up purchasing full indicator bulb change to the osram chrome type, Osram LED reverse light bulbs in 6000k Osram LED interior light in 6000k Osram LED parking lights in 4000k Philips white vision ultra H4 The reg plate light bar bracket 15" LED 216w 7D Light bar H4 headlight loom for light bar output 12v USB power outlet Piggy back fuse adapter to power USB socket A replacement registration plate incase the old one breaks on removal or the original holes dont match, 99% of the items arriving by Wednesday next week; just waiting on the H4 loom to arrive from China as unfortunately I couldn't source it elsewhere; I've bought one from eBay and one from amazon and I'll fit whichever one arrives first to avoid disappointment should one never arrive atall. The chicken chaser decals should be here next week too. The UFC one arrived today ☺️

Lenny
Update on everything so far; I've posted a bit on the "Things I do like" and "Things I dont like" threads but figured I'd keep everything relevant and up to date here too. I went to Halfords yesterday and saved €3.15 by using my fordownersclub discount card was supposed to be €21.00 but thanks to the discount card and €1.25 I had left on a Halfords gift card from Christmas I managed to purchase this Meguiar's headlight restoration kit for €16.60 comes with the polishing pad to fit to the drill, Will hopefully restore these headlights to almost new condition to get the most from the new bulbs when fitted, The items from amazon have started to arrive too; I do like the way amazon compiles orders in to one box; saves embarrassment at the door when receiving delivery as our local postman must have a huge Mortgage or is extremely passionate about supporting local businesses as he gets quite arrogant when I recieve a few packages; perhaps he thinks I don't work since I do work Continental shift patterns six days per week which is actually working more than most. But anyway; bulbs arrived so far: Still waiting on the T10 chrome side indicator bulbs, replacement reg plate, 12v USB socket, chicken chaser decals, light bar bracket & either one of the two H4 harness piggyback wiring looms, The 216W 15" light bar arrived today from amazon and its very impressive but it's a bit small 😬 well it is 15" I don't like that I've found myself becoming too tied to the internet and the sofa when it came to ordering this LED light bar which has ended up costing me 9.00 GBP if I wanted to return it 😂 This is embarrassing but I'll post it on here anyway; perhaps some can relate, When choosing the light bar size; I didn't bother getting off the sofa to measure the width of a standard registration plate 😬 Instead I got lazy and navigated online to the listing for the light bar reg plate bracket 👨💻 and looked at its width then assumed it was the exact same full width as the full width of a standard registration plate, The bracket width is 37cm as saw in image above; so I assumed the width of a uk reg plate must also be 37cm 🤷♂️ which is 14.567inches Based on those findings; I ordered a 15" LED 216w light bar to fit underneath the registration plate for 35.99GBP It is very impressive 😯 but it's a bit small, at this point; I still didn't go outside and meassure the width of a reg plate 🤦♂️ Instead I fetched the measuring tape and checked the width of the light bar and it is exactly 15" which is what I purchased. I then finally went outside the front door today and held it next to the rear registration plate of my focus: where it became apparent that the light bar was somewhat slimmer in width compared to the registration plate, It turns out the width of a registration plate is 520mm or 20.472 inches Now although the illumination output from this 15" bar is more than sufficient at 216W and it has a 7D lens to spread light better; Its going to look a bit small fitted in the centre of the registration plate at the bottom of my mates Toyota yaris Amazon do accept returns but they want 9.00 GBP from me to ship it back; which in this case is a penalty fine for me not getting up off my A and measuring before purchasing 🤦♂️ I've since purchased a wider 25" unit for 46.99GBP which will sit 2.5" wider than the registration plate and is considerably brighter at 500W LED with the same 7D lens for better spread on the road. Overall to summarise the story; I have shocked myself at how tied to Google and the internet I have become to the point where I proceeded with purchase of somthing without getting out there and measuring the thing first 🤦♂️ In other news; I've been looking at Toyota yaris for sale and breaking on various websites in order to get a good look at the dashboard to see where the 12v USB power socket could be best fitted and I've found a Yaris for sale which has a huge light bar fitted; It really is styled to a particular characteristic taste this one the slang is even apparent in the listing description aswell as the lack of vacuum usage in the boot compartment and I particularly like the non required image of the dials clearly showing an active oil light 😂 really helps sell it http://www.adverts.ie/17904845 In my opinion 15" is probably quite sufficient but may look a bit small under the registration plate; where a 20" is more shall we say "aesthetically pleasant" in line with the size of the reg; The 25" is as big as I would fit on the yaris as it will sit neatly inside the lower grill. But this outward curved 28" here is a bit too much; Being curved; it also sits outside the lower grill which doesn't look the best atall where the straight one were fitting using the "L" plate bracket fitted backwards; will allow the light bar to recess in to the bumper looking more streamlined and will be the same width as the registration plate with three rows of LED where that one has two rows. For the selling price of €350 it would probably be better off listed as selling a light bar & alloys with free shipping 😂🤣 rather than a car for sale. Getting back to myself now; hopefully all items should arrive before the month end and we will have some pictures to compare, I'm not sure if I will return the 15" 216W LED light bar as it will cost me a further 9.00 GBP to ship it back resulting in a refund of 28GBP I might keep it here and find use for it sometime. Solar panel kit for the shed and use it as a ceiling light or something.
zain611
That's pure luck for you to find a yaris with a light bar installed 😂. Definitely get the headlights sorted though. I'll be looking forward to the results 👍
Lenny
Custom Designed decals arrived today from Blunt.one Graphics https://blunt.one I'm very happy with how they have turned out 😂 In other news; I'm shipping back the 15" LED 216w light bar tomorrow; the replacement 25" 500w 7D LED unit is on the way instead.😂

Lenny
I'm expecting the 25" light bar to arrive next Wednesday from Amazon But in the meantime; I've presented him with the decals, bulbs and headlight restoration kit, Although he hasn't had time to use the headlight restoration kit yet due to have two kids under the age of two, He has fitted the decals and the bulbs, well some of the bulbs as the indicator bulbs well theres no point fitting the chrome because theres an amber lens within the headlight so it remains amber 🙄 and reverse bulbs are the wrong fitment there not P21 there some sort of T15 or T20 fitment 😅 The Philips H4 are fitted and hes very happy with them, he had HID's fitted in an Audi TT and says the Philips H4 are a close enough match and a definite improvement over the orginal bulbs which were fitted in the yaris; looking forward to further improvement when the headlight restoration is done there wont be any yellow atall and even further again 😂 when the 500w light bar is fitted. Looking good
Lenny
The light bar bracket has arrived along with the replacement reg plate as you can see it's got plenty of holes fitted making it more adjustable to requirements; I'll be fitting it in reverse form and upside down as shown above with the bracket fitted inwards on the lower grill of the mk1 Toyota yaris. The registration plate is 20.5" where the new light bar is 25" so it should look good being a little bigger than the reg plate on either side. More updates when the light bar and loom arrive aswell as the Q3.0 12v USB power supply for the dash.
zain611
How will you restore the headlights? Are you going to remove them or do it on the car? Be careful not to scratch that sticker.

Be careful not to scratch that sticker. I think hes going to lift open the bonnet and mask the rest of the area, He said the bumper has to come off in order to remove the headlights, And in my opinion to be honest there not worth the risk of damaging the parts because the entire vehicle cost him €500 and only used for commuting to work, its almost twenty years old and has more spots of patina on the body than a Ginger kid has freckles 🙊 He just keeps it serviced and certificates in order insurance, tax, and MOT, if a clip or something snapped then it's the bother of chasing breakers yards to find replacement; and would be terrible if the headlight broke when refitting after restoration. I reckon he will keep the bonnet open then mask up the remaining area, If or when it fails an MOT its destined for the scrap yard and pick up somthing else; his wife has a 2006 Range Rover which the light bar would also fit nicely; which I considered prior to purchase of the light bar so it's not a complete waste of money; Should the Yaris calf next week in other words "the engine fall out" 😅
Lenny
Update on the light bar and where were situated, I now have everything ready to go since the 25th July when one of the two wiring harness arrived, I only need one; but as suspected the customs in this country have grown quite attached to one of them currently delayed three weeks now they have it in Dublin Airport since the beginning of July; but thankfully this one came in through Portlaoise via address Pal in the uk. Means I can now get fitting and sell the other one when it arrives as they cant bd gotten anywhere fast. Anyway on with the update: Above you can see the H4 high beam to Light bar wiring harness on the top left along with the 25" LED Light bar, replacement registration plate, a Turbo badge for the boot of the 1.0 naturally aspirated vehicle☺️, spade connectors, some 15Amp cable and a piggy back fuse adapter to fit a 3.0 USB power supply which is also there along with an optional surface mount box only required if drilling the dash is not appropriate. Some M8 carriage bolts, penny washers and lock nuts to secure the registration plate bracket to the bumper with the large diameter washers increasing the grip inside the panel. Above you can see the 25" light bar Personally I think it looks very impressive and alot better than the previous 15" model I initially purchased for fitting as the lenses are consistent across the face of the unit. The registration plate is a little under 20.5" inches so this 25" light bar should look tidy tucked in under the reg plate with around 2.2"inches of bar on either side if fitted 😅 I have a 500W LED floodlight in the back garden which is equivalent to a 1200w Halogen light; heres the 25" light bar held close to it; the one SMD pad in the garden floodlight looks to be much the same size as one of the twelve fitted in the light bar 😂 that's some serious potential from the bar. Picked up some HSS space drill bits for fitting the 12v rocker switch and USB power socket in the dash; The H4 high beam to light bar loom has a 12v rocker switch as part of the loom which allows the driver to disable the light bar if required, I like this feature as if stopped by the police and asked to demonstrate high beam; just turn off the rocker switch prior to switching full beam headlights to disable the light bar from function as there for off road use only. Now all ready to fit since last Thursday 25th July; were both off work since 26th July for a week holidays as the plant is closed for maintenance; Neither of us are going abroad anywhere and I'm at home since Friday with not really much to do; I told him last Thursday that I've got everything now ready to fit so I'm waiting on the call to arrange installation. Half the osram bulbs purchased and presented to him at an earlier date; didn't fit the specific vehicle Seems I recieved the wrong fitment information from websites; thankfully the Philips H4 were correct though and are a massive improvement although the 25" LED light bar with the 7D lens will most likely be the icing on the cake 😯👌 Unfortunately the osram Chrome type bulbs are no use because Toyota have fitted orange lenses inside the light fittings meaning bulb change doesn't change the fried egg appearance there 🙄 I did try. As saw in this video
Lenny
The mighty Chicken Chaser arrived in to the driveway at 19:30 this evening 👍 I dropped him back home and got to work on it at around 20:30 And by 21:45 I have the first job of fitting a 12v USB Power Socket complete. Looks as good as factory fitted in the lower centre of the dash with three storage pockets situated above. A 3.0 USB socket with battery voltage display in a nineteen year old car looking factory Fresh 👌 The USB port is wired to a permanent live socket on the fuse board; it has a rocker switch on the face of the unit allowing for it to be switched off when not in use to best prevent battery drain, currently reading 13.0 Volts DC I've left the supplied rubber cover fitted; let him decide whether to leave it fitted or remove it. Not bad for results for less than two hours work; I hope to have the light bar finished by 19:00 tomorrow evening, Biggest job with it is; routing a 15AMP cable in to the drivers side of the dash The cable has to travel through the firewall on the passenger side of the vehicle and across inside the dashboard from a new relay fitted in the engine bay. I'll update with progress tomorrow; then hopefully get some night shots sometime next week

Waiting to that and the headlight restoration 😊. You don't know how many mk1 yarisis I've seen with fogged up headlights. Bit of a late update on this mate; I sort of post bits on the "Things I do like" thread but I should post here aswell to keep everything correct for google aswell; so here is possibly the final update of progress from me on the yaris. So the following morning after fitting the 12v USB power supply; I began fitting the 25" 7D LED light bar purchased from Amazon https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07QHLBDZ5?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_dt_b_product_details I used some PVC tape to hold the polystyrene packaging over the lens to protect it while fitting; Meassured a few times before drilling two 8mm holes in the bumper and fitted large diameter M8 penny washers to both sides of the holes in the bumper to maximise grip surface and prevent the bolts tearing out in the future. I ensured the light bar was fitted back far enough inside the bumper to protect from impact in the event the vehicle was to kiss somthing; the light bar wouldn't get cracked as you can see in the image below; the registration plate is the first item of contact on the vehicle. The 500Watt light bar is fitted on two adjustable brackets which are fitted to the bumper with two M8 bolts, theres a large Mi penny washer on both sides of the bumper hole then a plain 8mm nut followed by an 8mm Lock nut to best prevent them coming loose through vibration. The factory grill still remains in place; with the light bar loom travelling in through the top of the grill; cable tied along side the factory loom for the horn heading over to the passenger side of the engine bay towards the battery & firewall grommet. Theres also enough space between the inside of the bumper and the radiator to fit your hand inside; in order to adjust the angle of the light bar by loosening the Allen head bolts on the rear of the two brackets. With the light bar now securely positioned; I went ahead and removed the packaging which I was using to protect the lens ☺️ I had a cup of tea at this point and admired it from a few different angles 😅 it fits in there so well with equal gaps of grill on both sides and the layout of the lens formation helps keep everything centred & cemetrical and doesn't protrude Beyond the bumper, almost looks rally style. If it wasn't a 1.0Litre 😂 Made up some light brows using Grey PVC insulation tape 😂 looks mean Smiley picture then along side the A-Z of everything box for a review on amazon later I then unpacked the wiring harness which took over three weeks to arrive; I usually try out things like this before fitting or "bench test" as you might like to describe before taking the time to install, This time I didn't bench test it; I just started fitting, theres the relay fitted on an M8 bolt in image below: Then took the time to unravel the tape from the nineteen year old wiring loom grommet and routing a further three cables through it from the engine bay in to the passenger footwell; followed by routing them across to the drivers side of the dashboard where a rocker switch is fitted replacing an old unused toggle switch, I hadn't written on the dashboard; that's not to my taste atall 😬 done by a previous owner for an old switch; I since removed the writing and fitted the switch wiring, All cables discreetly routed in now to appear factory which is the way I like to install everything as much as possible And.... unfortunately after fitting the entire pre-wired loom it's not functioning as it should 😯😫 When earthing the loom to the chassis; the earth was arking in other words it was sparking off the chassis, meaning somehow theres power getting to an earth inside the pre-wired loom, The next issue was; when the loom was entirely fitted, the parking lights were continuously active which would drain the battery, The icing on the cake then was; the light bar came on after the full beam went off 😂 I checked all of my connections were 100% then I went to the local motor factor and bought a replacement relay which didnt solve the issue neither. So I then rewired the loom near the battery in the engine bay; fitted an additional 15AMP fuse and replacement relay; so now the LED light bar operates independently via the rocker switch fitted near the ignition on the dashboard. It will illuminate via the switch with or without the engine operating and completely independent from the standard high/low beam driving lights which will also keep the law happy. Above you can see it illuminated during the day, I did get to see it illuminated that night after fitting; he took me for a drive to test it out and although I didn't get to take any pictures of its illumination at that time; I will get some pictures to upload in the future, as for now though all I can say is that its phenomenal performance and much the same as the picture in the listing. Another item fitted to the rear of the 1.0 Litre Yaris dubbed The "Chicken Chaser" because of its nimble cornering but lack of speed was this Turbo badge 😂 And no turbo vehicle is complete without atleast one aftermarket Gauge on the dash, I had looked at 52mm analogue time Clock but there starting at 50.00 GBP For somthing that's going to be fitted for a laugh that's too expensive; instead I spent 11.00GBP on a set of these three gauges 😅 I'm expecting them to arrive soon from eBay the clock will be useful and the other two are chemical driven inside, theres no wiring involved just stick them on and admire 😂 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-in-1-Car-Mechanics-Quartz-Clock-Digital-Watch-thermometer-Hygrometer-Luminous-/323773938627?txnId=2084526470011 Now the Philips H4 have been fitted; he says there brighter than the stock and are an improvement; I've saw them fitted for myself and they are a nice white light however the yellow on the weathered headlight lenses is tinting there output to a shade of yellow ☺️ He has the headlight restoration kit which I gave him; says he will get around to using it soon, although I think the pressure of getting it done might have been eased by the installation of the light bar 😛 I do hope he gets the headlights restored soon though as it would look better along with the chrome shine from the light bar itself, Unfortunately the chrome indicator bulbs were pointless as the lenses are tinted inside, I'll get a lift home some night soon in order to take some night shots of the light bar and I'll post some pictures of the gauges when there fitted too. Thanks for reading I've enjoyed the entire process👍 I'm done spending on his car now but I've recommended he trys this bluetooth cassette adapter which is rechargeable via USB, so you charge it up via USB, then slot it in the cassette deck which the Yaris has fitted; then you can stream music or make telephone calls through the headunit, much cheaper than upgrading the headunit in a vehicle which may not last another year, he's keeping it along as it passes MOT inspection's not worth fitting an aftermarket dash conversion kit on somthing like it; this bluetooth cassette would be ideal. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bluetooth-CAR-AUDIO-TAPE-CASSETTE-ADAPTER-RECEIVER-FOR-IPHONE-IPOD-CD-MP3-RADIO/254050916287?_trkparms=ispr%3D1&hash=item3b269d57bf:g:LSIAAOSwCjFdR5sr

Lenny
1 hour ago, zain611 said: @Lenny anymore updates on the chicken chaser No sorry mate it's all finished now as far as I'm concerned; well I'm not spending anymore on providing items for it, I recieved the three little gauges for the dash which just peel and stick on; presented them to him for fitting there around a month ago and there still not fitted says he hasn't had time 🤷♂️ they just stick on the dashboard. Says he hasn't had time to use the headlight restoration kit yet neither, He doesn't even mention the bulbs or light bar atall in conversation and still hasn't returned to me; the osram LED Bulbs which were the wrong fitments, says for me not to worry about them; he will sell them on eBay says it will be fine 😂 Only acknowledges when I directly ask about any of it. Sort of regret wasting my money on things now to be fair; although the light bar is fun and I enjoyed fitting; I recieved nothing except a "thanks" in return having spent over €400 on doing everything correct and proper, So for us now on the forum too mate unfortunately it's not went as good as it could have in the end, feeling a bit deflated now myself too, but if anyone wants to install some free mods on my car anytime I'd be very appreciative
