Engine malfunction and ESP warning light Ford Focus 09

Featured Replies

Hi all, hope someone can help me...

ive got an 09 plate focus, 1.8 diesel manual zetec. A few months ago it randomly went into limp mode, and engine malfunction error message came on the dash accompanied with the ESP warning light. I called the AA out and they said there was a fault code for injector number one, so I went and got that changed the next day. Driving home from the garage, then engine started missing and I knew something wasn’t right. Took it back to the same garage the next day and left it with him for a few days. He changed the fuel filter, flushed the system etc and all seemed fine. I picked it up and went straight to bp to get some ultimate diesel and all seemed fine for a few days, then the same thing started happening. Engine kept missing, occasionally it would go into limp mode with the ESP light and engine malfunction on dash. Took to a different garage who couldn’t find a fault but rewired the injectors. Again took it back and all was fine for a day then it started happening again! After some research, I thought it was a good idea to buy some BG244, put that in and it ran perfectly for a month. Then yesterday it went into limp mode AGAIN, with the same warnings on the dash. Any idea what this could be? And has anyone else come across this before?

 thanks in advance

I had the exact same problems with mine ended up having all the injectors changed it ran fine after that perfect but it was an expensive fix.

Was really hoping it wasn’t going to be that, would cost me over half the value of the car

Well it may not be, it might be something else but what you described sounds like what was wrong mine.

Was yours intermittent as well? Engine occasionally missing when under heavy acceleration?

It would out the of the blue every so often, the only consistent thing that was happening to was it struggled at 1800 to 2000 revs, it was like a weird kind of judder it disappeared after I get the injectors replaced as well but it was fine the rest of the time plenty of power when needed. What I did was to replace the injectors with reconditioned ones from ford, there is specialists companies that can rebuild them but I needed mine fast so had to bite the bullet. I heard people taken the fuel injector assembly apart and replacing seals and given the injectors a good clean and stuff but if it’s the injectors itself it’s just wasting money.

After some digging I’ve discovered Ford released a technical service bulletin for injectors in the 1.8 duratorq tdci engine in my vehicle, just booked in with them to have the PCM updated. Quoted 60 quid, I’ll let you know how I get on

The update modifies the fueling to put the injectors under less load (because they're not up to the job).  Although it may help to avoid wearing out the affected injector batches, there's no gaurantee that it will prevent the issue and at 10 years old it's likely any damage (Excessive wear) has already happened.

That said, for just £60 it's probably worth a punt to hopefully avoid the excessive wear getting to the point where you having drivability issues.

Update.. just been to my local ford dealer, they tried the recalibration but wouldn’t download onto my pcm and they didn’t know why. Will try a dealer close to my work
