Hi Guys

Long time since I posted anything but I'm in a real predicament and would appreciate any advice. 

I'll be as brief as I can. 

Had to leave the car in with yesterday because there was an engine rattle. They said to look at it they'll have to strip the engine down and it'll be 9-10 hours labour at a cost on £80+vat to even diagnose the issue.

My issue is that I've left the car in twice before during the warranty period a few years ago when I first noticed the engine noise and they told me this noise was normal. So at the time I got them to out a note on the account to say I'd been in for that reason.

I've only just left it In with them yesterday but I am well and truly stuck without my car. Was wondering if anyone has ever experienced anything like this of whether you'd have any advice for me. 

Due to me making them aware of the issue at the time I'd have thought they might look at things differently but they aren't willing to assist with the cost at all. 

Next port of call is possibly going to a solicitor or making a scene on social media.

Really don't know what to do.

I don't think you'll get far with a solicitor if you expect the garage to fix the repair for free after a few years if you carried on driving the car with the "problem"

You should have got a second opinion at the time if you thought there was a problem, leaving it so long something else could have happened so it may be a fault that's developed since

Any other symptoms than just the rattle ? Gears not working properly? Check engine light ? Low oil pressure light staying on longer than normal when starting the car ?

No nothing like that, I've taken it to many people now who all suspect the engine needs to be taken apart to diagnose what it is but most suspect something with the pistons.

Tbh, it’s an Internet forum and someone expressed a fair opinion that you’re unlikely to get far with a solicitor if you’ve driven with the problem for a few years. Not 100% what anyone in this position wants to hear but it was a fair point. 

If most people now have said the engine needs to be taken apart, if you mentioned a cost of around £800 just to diagnose, it may be worth shopping around for a new engine. I’d image with the cost of the repair itself and the diagnostic, there wouldnt be a significant difference and if you find an engine in a good condition, it’s likely to be the safer option.

Yea twas a fair opinion, just giving my feedback on it. Which is also fair.  I did genuinely mean the thanks 😋

Yeah between a rock and a hard place at the mo. On the upside... I get to read more on the bus.
