Ford Focus Mk3 1.6 EcoBoost block.

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,
From about a month I'm proud owner of Focus Mk3 1.6 EcoBoost. It is my first Ford and I'have to say that I'm really impressed from the car and the way how you feel when drive around.
Unfortunately it has started to loose coolant. It was already serviced by the Ford recall and replaced the coolant tank, some hoses and added coolant level sensor. After that from Ford said that most probably the head of the engine should be checked at what condition is. When opened the engine it turned out that the block is cracked. At the moment I\m waiting to see if this will be covered from the Ford recall.
I would be kindly thankful if someone know about the Ford coolant issue recall will cover this damage or no. If it is not covered is the block from the ordinary 1.6 liter engine will be compatible or from some other engine type.
Thank you very much for the time and will appreciate any kind of help and advise.(I'm sorry if my language skills are not perfect)

Despite being based on the naturally aspirated 1.6 Sigma (Duratec) TI-VCT engine the 1.6 Sigma GTDI (ECOboost) engine has a completely different engine. The bottom end of a 1.6 Duratec TI-VCT engine is not suitible for a 1.6 ECOboost. The internal engine parts are completely different and not interchangeable.

Apart from this during production of the 1.6 ECOboost there were many major changes. Because of these major changes there are basically several different versions of the 1.6 ECOboost. For the early types of the 1.6 ECOboost replacement engines are no longer available. Ford only offers the latest type of the 1.6 ECOboost as a replacement engine. Several (hardware/software) modifications are required to replace an older version of the 1.6 ECOboost by the latest version of the 1.6 ECOboost. A replacement engine from Ford including installation and modifications will most likely cost more money than the car is actually worth.

During the recall Ford checked the condition of the engine by visually checking the engine block and cilinder head for (external) cracks and other symptoms that suggests loss of coolant. Only if there are no symptoms of coolant loss or engine damage the mechanic can proceed with the recall. The fact that the recall was performed on your car suggests that there was no coolant loss or engine damage detected during the recall. This basically suggests that there was nothing wrong with the engine when the recall was performed and the damage occured after the recall was performed.

Apart from this the main purpose of the recall was a safety issue and had nothing to do with a technical issue. If there had never been a safety issue there would never been a recall. The recall has also nothing to do with warranty. I highly doubt that the replacement of the engine will be covered by the recall unless the damage is detected during the recall.
